Dango Ouattara scored twice to help Bournemouth ease their forward crisis with a 5-1 victory over West Brom in the third round of the FA Cup.
Cherries boss Andoni Iraola said this week he would have to enter the January transfer market after serious injuries to forwards Evan Nelson and Enes Unal.
But on this evidence, he may not need to after Ouattara hit a double and Justin Kluivert, Antoine Semenho and Daniel Jebison were also on target.
The Premier League side were on the back foot after an early goal for the coachless Wallabies, who are sixth in the Championship.
Chris Brunt remains in interim charge as the club continues their search for Carlos Corberan’s successor, making seven changes to the starting XI – Iraola ) made six changes – and saw his side draw first blood in the 14th minute after Darnell Furlong won a free-kick. Kicked 30 yards.
Grady Diangana’s header bounced off the crossbar from John Swift’s cross, and Caleb Taylor reacted fastest to tap the rebound.
It was the defender’s first start for Albion since the third round last season and his first goal for the club since returning from a loan spell at League One side Wycombe last week.
The five-time FA Cup winners were confident on the ball and looked like their lead was valuable.
Until the 27th minute, David Brooks’s inswing pass missed everyone in the penalty area and was caught by the fingertips of visiting team goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith.
Kluivert lurked at the far post and slotted the ball into the roof of the net to equalize.
Seven minutes later, Kluivert’s clever reverse pass put Ouattara behind, and the Burkina Faso international shot neatly from a tight angle over Wildsmith.
A minute before half-time, Brooks launched a counterattack in midfield to lead Bournemouth on a counterattack.
His pass was perfect for Ouattara, who reveled in the center position and coolly beat Wild Smith for a second time.
Bournemouth have never won the FA Cup and have only made it past the fifth round in their history.
But two minutes into the second half, in the fourth round, they sealed their place when Semenho came on as a substitute and fed Ouattara a short corner.
The bloomers were cut too easily when Ouattara found Brooks, who slid the ball back inside for Semenho to fire high into the net.
Then, in stoppage time, substitute Jebison, who had just returned from Watford on loan, was replaced by Semenho and sealed the victory with his first goal for the Cherries.
managers
bournemouth manager Anthony Iolara:
“The forwards played well and most of them scored, so that’s really pleasing.
“Dango is playing very well and he has played the No. 9 position for the national team. We have players who can help us even if it is not their best position.”
“A lot of players played in positions they weren’t used to, and everyone helped us.”
West Brom interim manager Chris Brent:
“Obviously, defeat is disappointing. A heavy defeat is never easy to accept.
“We started well and were one goal ahead, which was probably the worst thing that could have happened. Bournemouth showed their Premier League quality that day.”
