Morgan Whittaker’s late solo goal helped Plymouth, the bottom team in the English Championship, defeat Premier League Brentford 1-0 in the third round of the FA Cup.
Plymouth, who sacked Wayne Rooney on New Year’s Eve and have not won a game since November 5, face an FA Cup third-round tie against a sluggish Bees side under the new Argyle boss. In front of coach Miron Musrich, Musrich attended the Gtech game. Community Stadium.
Thomas Frank’s side failed to make an impact in the top flight and brought on Brian Mbemo and Ioane Visa in the second half to try and break the deadlock.
But the responsibility fell to Whittaker – who had been heavily linked with a move to Brentford – who cut inside from the right and fired in near the post via Mikel Damsgaard’s deflection column.
Brentford, who once had the best home record in Europe, have now suffered three consecutive defeats at the Gtech Community Stadium.
