British Starmer promotes planned technology that uses artificial intelligence to “enhance” living standards

The British Prime Minister said artificial intelligence has the potential to “transform the lives of working people”.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will unveil a 50-point plan to establish the UK as a “world leader” in artificial intelligence (AI) and achieve a “decade of national renewal”.

The Department of Science, Innovation and Technology and the Prime Minister’s Office said Starmer will outline the AI Opportunities Action Plan in a speech on Monday, which will create dedicated AI growth zones to “drive growth” and “raise living standards” in the country. in a joint statement on Sunday.

The first growth zone will be established in Callum, Oxfordshire, and data center plans will receive faster approval and better access to the energy grid, the statement said.

The blueprint adopts all 50 recommendations made in a report commissioned by the Labor government last year by venture capitalist Matt Clifford and also proposes increasing state-owned AI computing power by 20 times and establishing a national database as well as Dedicated AI Energy Committee.

“Artificial intelligence will drive incredible change in our country. From personalized lessons for teachers, to supporting record keeping for small businesses, to speeding up planning applications, it has the potential to transform the lives of working people,” Starmer said .

“But the AI industry needs a government that is on their side, a government that won’t stand by and let opportunities slip through our fingers. In a competitive world, we cannot stand by and watch.”

Starmer’s announcement comes as his Labor government loses support just six months after taking office amid a sluggish economy.

The UK economy recorded 0% growth in the third quarter of 2024, raising concerns that the country could slip into its second recession in a year.

Starmer’s government estimates that artificial intelligence could deliver annual economic benefits of 47 billion pounds ($57 million) over a decade, according to an International Monetary Fund analysis that found the technology could boost productivity by up to 1.5 percentage points a year.

According to the 2023 Global Artificial Intelligence Vitality Ranking compiled by Stanford University, the UK’s artificial intelligence strength ranks third in the world, behind China and the United States.

“Our plans will make the UK a world leader. It will give the industry the foundation it needs and will drive plans for change,” Starmer said, referring to the six milestones he has set for the government, including Improving family living standards and reducing hospital waiting lists.

“It means more jobs and investment in the UK, more money in people’s pockets and a transformation of public services. That’s the change this government is bringing about.”
