Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned after nine years in power amid partisan pressure and low public support.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as leader of the Liberal Party amid growing pressure within the party to resign.
Speaking from a podium outside his Rideau Cottage residence in Ottawa on Monday, he added that he would also step down as prime minister once a new leader is elected.
“I intend to step down as party leader and prime minister after the party elects its next leader through a robust, national, competitive process. Last night, I asked the president of the Liberal Party to begin that process,” Trudeau explain.
In announcing the decision, the Prime Minister referred to the upcoming federal election, which must be held before October 20 this year.
“This country deserves a real choice at the next election, and it’s become clear to me that I can’t be the best choice in that election if I have to fight internally,” Trudeau explained.
Trudeau has been in power for nine years and his approval ratings have fallen in recent months, with his government narrowly surviving a series of no-confidence votes and critics calling for for his resignation.
