Catholic Church in the Philippines Charged with impunity for abusing priests

The Guardian Group accused the Catholic Church on Wednesday in the Philippines of the Culture of Chasidne, saying that she found many priests accused of sexual abuse of children and that many remain in the active service.

Group, bishop’s responsibility, said Identified 82 priests and brothers with relationships with the Philippines who have been accused of abuse in recent decades. He said he compiled a list from reputable media reports, court records, church documents and other public sources.

Men were local priests or those from abroad who were accused of abuse on the Philippines or the Philippine priests who served at home before facing accusations abroad. But no priest was convicted of sexual abuse on the Philippines, said the group, citing Bishop Buenaveventure Famadico. The country has the third largest number of Catholics in the world, about 85 million, after Brazil and Mexico.

It was the latest sign that a global scandal with the global abuse of the Catholic Church is still ricaging, this time in Asia, the region that the Vatican observes to grow. Pope Francis ordered the priesthood to report the allegations of abuse and cover -up, saying that every diocese must have a system that allows the public to easily submit reports.

“He sent them to really change things,” said Anne Barrett Doyle, co-Director Bishop of Liability. “None of this is visible in the Philippines.”

She added that the list of her group almost certainly did not cover all abuse because she was often not reported. The group was founded in Boston in 2003 and compiled similar lists of priests who were publicly accused of abuse in the United States, Argentina, Chile and Ireland.

At a press conference at Quezon City, Mrs. Doyle talked about six priests and portrayed their paintings.

One of them was the Reverend Jose Belcin, who was accused by prosecutors in Ceba for rape and abuse of children in 2006. The church removed him from his parish and forced him to pass the “process of spirituality,” said Mrs. Doyle.

But when police tried to arrest her father Belcina, they couldn’t find him. According to Mrs. Doyle’s group, when the journalist asked the spokesman of the Archdiocese of Ceba about Father Belcina’s location, he replied that he was not a priestly guardian.

Father Belcina denied the charges, which the accuser later rejected for reasons “reconciliation and peace.“The priest was then assigned to another parish in the Province in 2008. He remains in the active ministry.

The CEBU Archdiocese did not respond to the request for comment on the status of the cases of Belcina and other priests listed by Bishop responsibility.

“We hear about these cases because the victims were brave enough to go into the implementation of the law. The Church is never a source of information. Never,” said Mrs. Doyle.

The Catholic Bishops at the Philippines said she had founded a minor protection office in response to the mandate of Rome. Every diocese is also needed now to establish its own office for the protection of minors and vulnerable adults, which is under the supervision of the bishop.

“CBCP does not have direct authority as a conference for conducting such investigations. As a conference of the bishop, we are just building a consensus among ourselves about the usual policies that need to be adopted, “said his president, Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David.

He added that only Rome, who represented Nuncio, has a direct disciplinary body over individual bishops.

“As long as the problem is contained in the church, no justice,” Mrs. Doyle said. “The Church cannot be self -icing when it comes to abuse.”
