Chris Boyd has given a scathing assessment of Philippe Clement’s future as Rangers manager, believing changes are needed after the club fall further behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.
Rangers’ poor away form continued with a 1-1 draw away to Dundee on Thursday, which leaves them 15 points behind their opponents at the top of the table.
They start the campaign at Dens Park with just three wins from 10 league games away at Ibrox but have Oluwasen Adewumi canceled after Vaclav Cerny After scoring the opening goal 0-0 in the second half, they were unable to complete the reversal to improve this record.
The result gave further ammunition to those who believe Clemente’s time at Ibrox should be over, with the club’s away fans expressing their displeasure at the final whistle.
“It’s just one excuse after another,” former Rangers striker Boyd told us Sky Sports. “Rangers have a team that should come here and brush off Dundee but they’re holding on.
“Thirteen points from 33 away from home is a disgrace. You can talk about progress but there is no progress. You talk about players being tired and lacking confidence. A week ago or ten days ago you absolutely destroyed Celtic – destroyed them.
“And you’re struggling for confidence. Before the Celtic game, you lost two, you drew one, you lost one. There was nothing in the Celtic game. The battle of faith.
“Now, after this, you draw two more games and there’s a lack of confidence in them. It doesn’t make sense at all.
“I just look at the situation at the club and on the pitch now and it’s broken. There’s no game pattern, nothing. You always look at the Celtic game as Rangers’ best performance of the season.
“But it can’t be just a one-off, we know that. It’s an absolute disgrace that Rangers are in this position.
“You can see you’re not spending money. Money is being spent. Yes, there’s cost cutting, but money is still being spent.”
“There’s been no improvement. We talked about injuries as well. I mean, it’s actually worse.
“You can talk about moving guys around and having to play extra minutes. Guess what? You’re a football player. That’s what you’re paid to do, is play time.
“There’s been no progress at all. It’s been done.
“Now it’s (Rangers chief executive) Patrick Stewart’s turn because I’m telling you right now, these are the last two away games we’ve played.
“Those fans have had enough and they’re going to stop coming to games and then you’re going to see the real problems start to emerge at Rangers because this can’t continue.”
Sutton: Brendan pops open the champagne
Chris Sutton said on Sky Sports:
“Philippe Clement has to take responsibility but the players on the pitch also have the knowledge and understanding of how to win games.
“You look at the squad at Rangers and you think, ‘Does this shirt suit a lot of players?’ I’ve said before that there’s a losing mentality at the club but nothing has really changed and it’s not just Philippe Clement’s question.
“This has been happening for years. You saw how flat it was tonight. Celtic are laughing at them.
“Brendan Rodgers, tonight he’s going to pop the champagne and laugh at them. It’s embarrassing that we’re at the beginning of January and Celtic are 15 points clear at the top. It’s shocking and amazing.
“We had a chat before the game and Chris (Boyd) and I thought Philippe Clement should have left a long time ago. But they are at a crossroads now because can this continue? The club Going backwards.”
“So are we going to look at that, or is Patrick Stewart going to look at the bigger picture and not just one game against Celtic or, you know, the odd game in Europe?
“Clement will come out and talk about Celtic having a bigger budget but Rangers shouldn’t be conceding 19 points against a team with a much smaller budget than them and he never mentioned that .
“We hear that excuse every week now. It’s not good enough. It’s time for him to take over ownership and he won’t.”
“But this Belgian waffle is going to go on and on and on. It’s not going to stop until a decision is made on him.”
