Costco and the Teamsters Union have reached an interim agreement on a new contract, avoiding a strike, said the union on Saturday.
Teamsters spokesman Matthew Mcquaid confirmed the agreement, which must be approved by members. Agreement details were not immediately available. The Associated Press left a message looking for a comment with Costco.
The Teamsters Union represents 18,000 costco workers in six states: California, Washington, Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey and New York. Generally, Costco has 219,000 North -Americans and 617 North -American stores. The company said that its labor agreement with Teamsters applies to less than 10% of these stores.
On January 20, Costco’s Teamsters members voted overwhelmingly in favor of a strike if a new three -year agreement was reached at midnight on Friday, when the current contract expired.
Union members wanted the Issaquah company Washington to offer a contract that reflects its growth in sales and benefits. Costco income increased by 5% to $ 254 billion in their latest fiscal exercise, which ended on September 1. The company reported a net revenue of $ 7.36 billion, double its benefit in 2019.
“Costco teams deserve a leading contract in the industry that reflects the mass benefits of the company. If Costco believes that our members can explode while in billions of million, we will close them, “said Teamsters, Sean O’Brien, in a statement.
