Cowboys hire Brian Schottenheimer as next head coach

After two seasons as the team’s offensive coordinator, Schottenheimer will take over as head coach, replacing Mike McCarthy, who agreed part ways He was with the team after a disappointing 7-10 season.

Since the Cowboys parted ways with McCarthy a week after the season ended, the organization missed the opportunity to interview prospects like Mike Vrabel, Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn early in the process.

Schottenheimer joined the organization as a coaching analyst in 2022 and succeeded Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator in 2023. Schottenheimer’s first year as offensive coordinator coincided with quarterback Dak Prescott’s best season, as the team won the NFC East title and the entire league.

However, 2024 is a different story. After Prescott suffered a season-ending injury, the team ranked 16th in total offense.

Still, Schottenheimer’s work as offensive coordinator was enough to prompt Cowboys owner Jerry Jones to select him as head coach, bypassing other potential options including Deion Sanders and Jason Witten.

Schottenheimer, 51, has nearly three decades of experience as an offensive assistant coach. He served as offensive coordinator for several other teams before joining the Cowboys in 2022, with stints with the Jets (2006-11), Rams (2012-14) and Seahawks (2018-20) Coordinator.

Schottenheimer is also the son of former NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer. The elder Schettenheimer has been the head coach of four teams and has the ninth-most wins as a coach (205) in NFL history.
