This arrest comes at a time when the Canadian authorities have significantly increased the border security measures, especially between the official ports of the entry, in response to increasing concerns about drug trafficking and illegal migration that Trump’s administration launched earlier this year.

Since then, Canada has invested a lot in cross -border surveillance and implementation. These investments led to more arrests at irregular transition points such as railway bridges and remote roads.

Rcmp says this area is still a focal point for illegal border crossings. Several recent attempts were intercepted on the railway bridge and all individuals eventually returned to the USA

SGT. Lepa Jankovic with the RCMP border integrity unit says that efforts to maintain safety around the borders have improved.

“RCMP still sees a positive operational impact of new investments in the implementation of the law between entry ports and collaborative efforts with CN police, OPP and CBSA in maintaining the safety and integrity of the Canadian borders,” she said.
