U.S. officials have announced plans to release only parts of a report detailing the federal investigation into President-elect Donald Trump after a court decided to block some of the findings.

On Wednesday, the Justice Department said it would release a report that will focus on special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into Trump’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

However, it will not delve into a second federal investigation into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents while out of office after his first term ended in 2021.

The announcement means the public is unlikely to learn some information about the confidential documents investigation for the foreseeable future.

Trump will be inaugurated in less than two weeks on January 20, which will bring the Justice Department under his control.

Those members must agree not to disclose the portion while legal proceedings in the confidential documents case continue.

“This limited disclosure will advance the public interest and inform congressional leadership of significant matters within the Department of Justice while protecting the interests of the defendants,” the Justice Department wrote in court documents.

These procedures were key to the decision to suppress the release of confidential portions of the report.

On Tuesday, federal Judge Aileen Cannon temporarily prevent its releaseciting the ongoing legal battle.

While charges against Trump in the classified documents case were dropped in November, two of his co-defendants, Trump employees Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira Oliveira) — still faces the possibility of a criminal trial.

The Justice Department has not said when it will release another volume of the report, which focuses on allegations of election interference.

Smith also filed in November to drop charges in the case, citing Trump’s impending return to office. He cited the Justice Department’s policy against prosecuting a sitting president.

The case focuses on Trump’s actions before and after the November 2020 election, when the Republican incumbent faced off against Democrat Joe Biden for the presidency.

Trump ultimately lost. But Smith and his team of federal prosecutors argued that Trump was caught up in a conspiracy to deceive the United States by overturning his defeat and disrupting official procedures to certify the correct outcome.

Trump continues to falsely claim that he won the 2020 election and that his victory was denied due to widespread voter fraud.

In a court filing Wednesday, the Justice Department said Attorney General Merrick Garland had “clear” authority to issue a report centered on allegations of election interference.

“Indeed, for the purposes of Volume 1 of the Final Report, the defendant’s situation is little different than that of any other member of the public,” the department said.

Garland, a member of President Joe Biden’s outgoing administration, appoints Smith as special adviser 2022 To avoid any conflict of interest, a political appointee may lead the case.
