Dyche is confident it leaves Toffee in ‘good shape’

Sean Dyche says he did everything he could to “protect the badge” and is confident he left Everton with the team on “steady footing” and “in good shape”.

Dyche was sacked by new owners the Friedkin Group last week, hours before the FA Cup tie with Peterborough United.

He left Everton 16th in the table after winning just three of 19 Premier League matches this season and was replaced by David Moyes.

In a statement released by the League Managers Association, Dyche said: “It has been an honor to manage Everton, a football club with a significant legacy and enormous following in Liverpool and around the world, through one of the most difficult periods in its history. However, I wanted to ensure that the narrative of the club was focused on the positive direction it would take in the future and that the team could focus on competing in the Premier League in the present.

“I would like to thank my staff, players and all involved who played their part, as without their support and expertise it would not have been possible. I also want to thank the fans who came through for us many times when we all needed their support.

“Great respect” for Moyes’ return.

He added: “The time is right to leave the club as the team is in a good position. David is a manager I have the utmost respect for and I believe he and his staff will help the club grow again and build on the solid foundations we have implemented over the last two years.

“I wish everyone well, including the new owners, who I hope will take the club to the next level and deliver the success every Evertonian desires.

“My role as a custodian has been fulfilled and I will always be very proud of it. After going through some very difficult situations, I never lost faith in everyone around me and we did everything we could to protect the badge, protect it and protect the name of Everton Football Club.”

Moyes managed Everton from 2002 to 2013 and will begin his second spell tonight when the Toffees host Aston Villa at Goodison Park.
