Elon Musk and Far-Right German Leader Agree ‘Hitler Was a Communist’

On Thursday, Elon Musk agreed with the leader of a far-right German political party that Adolf Hitler was a communist and that left-wing groups that support Palestinian causes have more in common with the Nazis than with his own. party.

The highly unusual and disinformation-filled conversation between Musk and Alice Weidel, the leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), took place at X. It came after weeks of Musk’s efforts to promote the far-reaching right party, which has deep links of neo-Nazism and surveillance because of suspected extremism by Germany’s own intelligence services.

“(Hitler) was a communist, and he considered himself a socialist,” Weidel said in response to Musk asking about media reports linking the AfD to Nazism.

“The biggest achievement after that terrible time in our history was to brand Adolf Hitler as right(-wing) and conservative, he was exactly the opposite,” said Weidel. “He’s not a conservative, he’s not a libertarian, he’s a communist, socialist man, and we’re the opposite.”

“Right,” Musk replied.

In his autobiography My fightHitler—who as the leader of the German Reich was responsible for the invasion of the Soviet Union and the enslavement and death of millions of its citizens—repeatedly defined communism as the enemy of the German nation. He believed that Marxism was a Jewish conspiracy to control Germany and the world.

Weidel also compares the views of the Nazi Party to modern-day left-wing political groups that support Palestine in the face of what is called a UN commission. crimes against humanity committed by Israel. While his colleagues in the AfD were spotted last month attended a secret meeting organized by former members of a militant neo-Nazi group known for burning the Israeli flag, he said, “The AfD is the only defender of the Jews here in Germany.”

Weidel is the AfD’s candidate for chancellor in Germany’s snap election, which will take place next month. As someone who used to work in finance and lives in Switzerland with his wife, who is from Sri Lanka, and their children, he is presented as a relatively moderate face for the party.

It’s something Musk picked up on in an op-ed he wrote last month for a German newspaper.

“The portrayal of the AfD as right-wing extremists is patently false, as Alice Weidel, the party’s leader, is gay from Sri Lanka,” Musk wrote.

Ahead of Thursday’s talks, the EU said it would monitor the event to see if it was artificially promoted by German voters, something that would violate the region’s Digital Service Act rules. A spokesperson for the European Commission told WIRED that it would not comment on the contents of the livestream.

Weidel referred to the EU’s concern over the conversation, claiming that 150 EU commission officials were listening in, then admitted that the DSA was a censorship tool, before adding: “You know when What did Adolf Hitler do? He shut down free speech. He controlled the media, and without that he would never have succeeded.
