Energy and food prices drove inflation in December


Inflation increased in December to its highest level since July, with much of the increase driven by rising energy and food prices.

The US Department of Agriculture noted in a report this month: “Supply remains the biggest challenge in the market as highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) continues to affect commercial table egg flocks heading into the new year.”

Beef prices also rose at a faster pace than overall food prices in December on both an annual and monthly basis. Beef prices rose 0.5% in December from the previous month and rose 4.9% from a year ago.
