Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca insisted he still “trusts” goalkeeper Robert Sanchez after a disastrous display during Saturday’s defeat to Manchester City, but is not committed to seeing eye to eye with the error-ridden Spaniard.
Sanchez did not cover himself in glory City’s equalizer at the Etihad StadiumOn the stroke of half-time the ball failed to stop Mathias Nunes before calling on Josko Guardiola. However, the goalkeeper saved his best mistake for the second half.
After strangely charging out of his area in a clumsy attempt to stop a long ball over the top Erling LandSanchez was caught in two minds as to whether he should backtrack to his goal line, or run towards the ball. In the end, he did neither, and the city was skillfully hidden by the ruthless number nine.
This is hardly Sanchez’s first misstep—no Premier League player has made more errors leading to the 27-year-old’s five goals this season.
When reflected 3-1 lossIn a game in which Chelsea took a commanding lead after just three minutes, Maresca sighed: “We trust Robert for sure, but at the same moment the first person who knows he’s making mistakes is Robert. Now we have a whole We have a week (to train) and we see the reaction and decide for the next game.”
The Italian coach added: “Robert is definitely aware that he has to do better. He was fully aware after the game, he is fully aware.
“The good thing is that he is the first to know he has to do better.”
Maresca has been keen to defend his goalkeeper against criticism this season, but warned that the Spain international is “still far, far, far from where I want to be” in the days ahead of the Etihad weekend.
The Blues have regularly fielded Danish shot-stopper Filip Jorgensen in cup competitions this season. The 22-year-old summer signing from Villarreal has made just two appearances Premier League games this season – and failed to keep a clean sheet against Southampton or Ipswich Town.
Chelsea is Temporarily attached No deal is expected this month, however, with a move for Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. After Sanchez’s latest error-strained display, Maresca could demand a new number sooner rather than later.
