Every Tesla Cybertruck Recall Since The Vehicle Was Released


the The Tesla Cybertruck hits the streets in December 2023and since then it has been everywhere from city streets to Fortnite and Rocket League. But the road wasn’t always smooth for the sharp-angled Cybertruck; Tesla has currently issued seven recalls for stainless steel pickups.

Tesla is sitting on top of the list in terms of total vehicles recalled in 2024, with 5.1 million vehicles compared to 4.3 million for No. 2 Ford. The futuristic-looking Cybertruck is one of Tesla’s most expensive vehicles, with prices ranging from $80,000 to $102,000, depending on the trim. The price can also go up, based on add-ons like Full Self-Driving mode, which costs $8,000 (and is not fully autonomous, despite its name).

Although Tesla has not announced any official sales figures, Forbes estimates that 28,250 Cybertrucks will be sold by October 2024. Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.

Here is every recall issued for the Tesla Cybertruck so far, according to the website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Incorrect font size on warning lights

This one isn’t just for the Tesla Cybertruck. Affected vehicles include the 2012-23 Tesla Model S, 2016-24 Model X, 2017-23 Model Y and the 2024 Cybertruck. NHTSA found that the font size on the instrument panel for the brake, park and ABS warnings was too small, making it too difficult for the driver to read.

To fix the issue, Tesla issued a free over-the-air update, preventing owners from taking their Teslas to dealerships for an official fix.

Unintended acceleration from a stuck pedal

Certainly the largest recall for the Cybertruck, this one affects Cybertrucks manufactured from November 13, 2023, through April 4, 2024. NHTSA said a report that the accelerator pedal on some Tesla Cybertrucks can become dislodged and trapped in the interior trim, causing the vehicle to accelerate uncontrollably. Drivers can stop unintended acceleration by pressing and holding the brake pedal, which cuts power to the vehicle’s electric motors.

Tesla owners should take their Cybertrucks to the dealership, where technicians will repair or replace the accelerator pedal assembly for free. According to the NHTSA reportthe problem is caused by residual lubricant accidentally introduced during the manufacturing process which causes the pad to fall off the pedal assembly, thus getting stuck. Once fixed, the pedal is no longer in danger of getting stuck.

The front windshield wiper may fail

According to Tesla and the NHTSA, excessive electrical current is sometimes sent to the front windshield wiper motor controller through a faulty component. The excess current eventually causing the motor to fail. Once the motor catches fire, the front windshield wiper will not work until it is repaired.

The issue affects Tesla Cybertrucks manufactured from November 13, 2023, to June 6, 2024, totaling 11,688 units. To fix the issue, owners are encouraged to take their Teslas to the dealership where the wiper motor is replaced with a non-defective component.

Improper adherence to the bed frame trim can be removed

This recall was issued on the same day as the windshield wiper issue. Tesla said a cosmetic truck applique, known as a sail applique, was installed incorrectly on some Cybertrucks. The appliques use an adhesive to attach to the truck frame, and some models have improper installation of the adhesive. The result is that the cut piece can loosen or even fall off over time, causing a road hazard for other drivers.

Cybertruck owners are asked to bring their trucks to the dealership to have the issue fixed. Repairs include replacing any missing pieces of trim, using an adhesion promoter to strengthen the existing adhesion, and using pressure-sensitive tape to hold the piece in place. The affected trucks were manufactured from November 13, 2023, to May 26, 2024.

The rearview camera image may not be visible

The Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard states that the rearview camera must display an image within 2 seconds of the vehicle being reversed. In some conditions, the vehicle system may not complete the shutdown process before it is expected to boot again. This causes a delay that prevents the rearview camera from showing anything longer than 2 seconds, which violates federal rules.

As with the incorrect font size recall, Tesla was able to fix it with a free over-the-air update that prevented owners from returning to the dealership for repairs. Affected Cybertrucks include those manufactured from Nov. 13, 2023, until Sept. 14, 2024.

Inverter fault can cause loss of drive power

This is Tesla’s second recall affecting the Cybertruck’s electrical system. This is caused by faulty metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors, otherwise known as MOSFETs and common in modern cars. A small number of Cybertrucks have faulty versions of these drive inverter transistors, which can cause the inverter to fail. The failure causes the trucks to stop generating torque and therefore simply stop moving. The NHTSA investigation noted that there were no warning signs prior to the failure, so the stoppage could have occurred at any time.

The repair requires Tesla Cybertruck owners to go to the dealership where the inverter is replaced free of charge. This recall is relatively new so owners have not been formally notified by Tesla. The takeover date is planned for the first week of January 2025. The affected trucks were manufactured between Nov. 6, 2023, and July 30, 2024.

The tire pressure warning-light issue

Tesla is remember nearly 700,000 vehicles in 16 different car models due to an issue with its tire-pressure monitoring system. The recall affects the 2024 Cybertruck and 2017-2025 Model 3 and 2020-2025 Model Y vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The warning light that monitors the tire pressure may not stay on, meaning drivers may not know that the tire pressure is low. That increases the risk of a crash. Tesla released a free over-the-air software update to help correct the issue. Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification letters in the mail starting in mid-February 2025.
