The seven-year wait is over. Nintendo the next console has been officially revealedthe Switch 2. Now that the reveal has happened, after months of speculationwe can all move on to something else, right? Not so fast. The short introductory video actually generated more questions than answers. There’s a lot we don’t know about Nintendo’s upcoming hybrid console, so let’s get down to it.

When will it come out?

We don’t know! Nintendo has a Direct livestream planned for April 2nd, where we might get that information. It will be some time after that, but during 2025. Maybe they will do a quick turnaround and it will be ready for sale at the end of April, but a summer release is more likely. It is also possible for the company to wait until the start of the profitable holiday season. People will be able to play it in the near future, though, just like Nintendo conducts personal events around the world from April to June.

What are the internal specs?

This is another mystery. The introductory video only shows the exterior of the console, along with the updated controllers. No mention of internal specs. Of course, there are many rumors about the power of Nintendo’s next console, but nothing concrete. Some analysts predict the console include an eight-core Cortex-A78AE processor, 8GB of RAM, and 64GB of internal eMMC storage, while others say it will be powered by a NVIDIA produces the Tegra239 SoC (system on a chip). Most people seem to agree that the system will include some version of NVIDIA’s DLSS “deep learning supersampling” upscaling tech.

What about the screen?

We see the screen in motion, possibly running some version of the upcoming Mario Kart game. The video gives us some insight into the size of the display, as it can be seen around 30 percent larger than the current model. It follows rumors that it will feature an 8-inch screen. However, we don’t know what kind of display will accompany the console. Rumors here vary. Some analysts predict a Mini-LED screenwhile others expect a traditional LCD. It probably won’t be an OLED, as the company is likely to save that for a future upgrade.

What is the battery life?

There aren’t any credible rumors about it, but there were some speculations last year about the company’s adoption of a part of the performance mode with the Switch 2. Nintendo wants to hit the mass market sweet spot, so I’d be surprised if the battery life doesn’t match the Move 4.5 to nine hours on OLED of playing time per charge. The console will be more powerful than the OG Switch, sure, but it will also be bigger. That extra room can be home to a durable battery.

How much does it cost?

This is another unknown. Nintendo is likely to reveal pricing information on April 2. The original Switch was launched at $300, like the Wii U. However, inflation is real and supply chains are rickety. Rumors are circulating that the price can shoot up to $400or higher. Nintendo tends to raise the prices of the base level console every couple of generations. The GameCube originally cost $200 and the Wii $250.

Do the controllers have optical sensors?

It has long been rumored that the Switch 2 include a mouse-like device through the optical sensors of the Joy-Cons. We don’t have exact confirmation on that, but the introductory video certainly hints at it. Eagle-eyed viewers may have spotted a segment showing Pixar-like controllers moving around a table like, well, two computer mice. If true, Nintendo will probably come up with some wacky software that combines mouse and controller inputs. In any event, this addition will definitely do things like that Civilization VI easier to play. It can also be a sign of a new one Mario Paint.

What is that unmarked button on the right side?

Viewers may also have noticed a new button on the bottom right of the Joy-Con. This was previously rumored to be a “C” button, but it was not marked in the introductory video. We don’t know what it does, so your guess is the same as ours. Maybe it’s calibrating the controllers or starting the voice chat. Maybe we will find out on April 2.

What’s the deal with backwards compatibility?

Yes, the Switch 2 is backwards compatible with the original Switch games. This is great news, but the intro video notes that “some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” We don’t know what this means or how many titles it will affect. It’s a fair bet that it refers to some of the wackier stuff from the previous generation, such as Nintendo Labo or Mario Kart: Home Circuit.

Will stick drift be a problem?

We’ll have to wait and see on that one, but the reveal video took some time to show a joystick making cute little circles. Previous leaks have shown that Nintendo has learned its lesson about stick-drift and the new console include Hall effect joysticks. We hope so.

What would the UI be like?

The Switch’s user interface is, for better or worse, extremely minimal and bare-bones. It brings the online shopping experience. We don’t know if the Switch 2 will involve some Nintendo-grade wackiness when it comes to the UI. My hope is that it will bring it back long forgotten social network Miiverse. Crazy and fun. Modern social media apps are many things, but not me they will definitely be called crazy or fun.

Is there anything weird about Nintendo?

From the headache-inducing 3DS to the, well, equally headache-inducing Virtual Boy, Nintendo has always marched to the beat of its own drum. The Switch 2, however, seems like a more conservative release for the company. It’s a more powerful and slightly larger Switch.

Was there anything strange about Nintendo that saved the company in the Wii age and nearly destroyed it in the Wii U era? We don’t know yet. It’s possible that the aforementioned optical sensors or “C” button can lead to wild and bad gaming experiences. It is also possible that there will be features that are yet to be announced. This is Nintendo we’re talking about here.

What are launch games?

It’s a total unknown, though fans hoping for a new Mario Kart definitely got a jolt in that reveal video. It includes a fair amount of footage from what appears to be a new Mario Kart, complete with revised character designs and the potential for 24-man races.
