Gary Neville said United need five new signings to fit Ruben Amorim’s system.
United ranked 13th in a 0-0 home victory at Manchester City at home on Sunday, winning just two games in their last eight league games.
Amorim sticks to his favorite 3-4-3 formation and has achieved different success after signing £30m left-wing Patrick Dorgu from LECCE in the winter transfer window – but Sky movement” Neville thinks they need more additions.
“From a joint perspective, I understand why he went back to a low,” Neville said. “But that’s what we see from Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik Ten Hag.
“They all plan to play high pressure, high energy football, but they all end up back in big games.
“I do understand why Ruben Amorim did this with the players he had today because he didn’t have a player to adapt.
“They need to need five new players right away before you even think about the rest.
“The three fronts are not good enough, two defenders, they are not good enough. They need five players. They need to provide him with five players in that system to be able to play his system the way he wants.”
Neville is disappointed with the “love” between Manchester Derby full-time players, “tell you that both teams are satisfied with 0-0”.
Amorim replied in a post-match press conference: “I know Gary Neville is crucial to everything. I know our historical season is the worst. Manchester City have won all the victories in the past, but this season they are struggling. So, we are not trying to provide the best wonder for the fans. We are not fighting for big things.
“I understand the key aspects of the players who have played this game differently because they fight for the title every time. It’s a different background.”
“Elanga, Rashford, Welbeck are all better than the current strikers”
Neville spoke before a 0-0 draw with Man City, comparing United’s current forward with the departure striker.
“There is no Manchester United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson, except Louis van Gaal, who was able to have the game he owned. That’s a real problem.
“The players in front are not the quality required by the club. It sounds really harsh, but it’s the truth.
“It will require smart recruiting, which means getting players out of the box at a good price and attracting underrated players – that’s what all teams are trying to do in the league!
“You can bring four players who are no longer at Manchester United – Anthony Elanga, Marcus Rashford, Danny Welbeck and Scott McTominay – who will perform much better than the current four players.
“Manchester United let the players go – I’m not saying they’re the solution now. But they’re replacing players who are not at the standard, not those at that level.”
