India head coach Gautam Gambhir has broken his silence on the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the Test team after their defeat in the fifth Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Gautam Gambhir refused to comment on the futures of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli and said it depends on them.
Virat and Rohit are going through a tough time with the bat. The duo failed to live up to expectations in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). Rohit missed the first Test and reappeared in the second Test but lost in the series final. Virat failed in all his innings except the second in Perth.
I can’t talk about any player’s future – Gautam Gambhir
When asked about the future of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir said the decision lies with the players themselves. He said the two still have a hunger and passion for the game. Gambhir also noted that whatever decision they take will be in the best interest of the people of India.
“So what do you think the future holds for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma?” asked the reporter.
“Look, I can’t talk about the future of any player, that depends on them as well. But what I can say is that they still have the hunger, they still have the passion, they are strong people. Hopefully they can continue to push Indian cricket Moving forward, but as we all know, whatever they plan, they will plan in the best interest of the people of India,” Gambhir replied.
Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma’s recent Test difficulties
Kohli’s recent performances have raised questions over his future in Test cricket. He scored just 190 runs in nine innings at an average of 23.75. His struggles, especially his frailty off the field, raised eyebrows. The batsman has hit only 3 centuries in 39 Tests in the last 5 years.
Rohit scored only 31 runs in five innings at a disappointing average of 6.20 in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In the last 15 Test innings, Rohit has scored 164 runs at an average of 10.93 and has a half-century. The Indian cricket team will next play a Test series against England in June.
Rohit Sharma proved it in last game – Gautam Gambhir
Gautam Gambhir also spoke about the discussion surrounding Rohit Sharma’s decision to withdraw from the tournament. He noted that when leaders put the team before personal interests, this should be viewed as a positive rather than a negative. Gambhir stressed that the country must always be the top priority.
“The first thing I want to stress is that there are too many reports and opinions being circulated. We should be more sensible about this issue. If a leader, not necessarily the captain, chooses to prioritize the team over himself, then that’s okay Wrong,” Gambhir said.
“It’s been said a lot, but the bottom line is that while individuals may come and go, the team and the country must always come first. I believe everyone, including myself and other players, should put the team before individuals. Benefit over profit. Rohit Sharma has proven that, we have discussed responsibility and Rohit showed that in the last game.”
