Gear Up With Magic’s Wild New Racing Set

Magic: The Gathering has played with dozens of genres and moods in its long history—but “racing” and “sci-fantasy card game” aren’t exactly the first things that come to mind when you think. of potential mashups. That is changing MagicThe next major expansion, and we take a look at some of the new cards that line the starting block.

Centered around a multiversal racing tournament, Aetherdrift built around the plane of MagicThe vast cosmology of the former is known as Kaladesh (recently renamed Avishkar beyond Aetherdriftnor release due to controversial interpretations in its inspiration from Hindi), as 10 racing teams vie for success across the planes as they race the Ghirapur Grand Prix, a glittering celebration of Avishkar’s history in underground racing that offers a exciting first prize: the Aetherspark, a mysterious device that theoretically holds. the power to allow its user to use the power of a Planeswalkerthough they lack the latent power to become one. But to have a chance to get the Aetherspark, you need a ride-and Aetherdrift has a lot to offer with its new cards, like the Possession Engine, which you can check out below in all its variants!

Magic: The Gathering – Aetherdrift View: Machine Ownership

As you can see in the preview above Machine Ownership (with borderless alternate art as well as matching gold cut “booster fun” variants), the Vehicle subtype for artifact cards plays a major role in Aetherdrift. While there are cars that show up Magic in the past, now there are many of them Aetherdrift comes with a new mechanic, Crew, abilities activate tapping a certain number of unused creatures that you control with total power more than the required number. on Machine OwnershipThe case, having the right number of crew will allow you to target one of your opponent’s creatures, preventing them from attacking or blocking as long as it is in play.

Magic: The Gathering – Aetherdrift Preview: Marshal’s Pathcruiser

The crew isn’t the only new mechanic coming in Aetherdrift that ties into the racing theme—sometimes a racer has to go all out in a desperate move to try and get a leg up, and that comes in the form of Exhaust. Exhaust abilities can only be used once, and their high cost usually comes with a potentially high reward. As you can see in our preview of Marshal’s Pathcruiser on top of that, its Exhaust ability allows it to swap Artifact subtypes from Vehicle to creature (allowing it to be used as crew for other Vehicles), and boosts its stats with two additional +1/ +1 counters.

You can see these cards, and more, in action whenever Magic: The Gathering – Aetherdrift will be on shelves starting February 14.
