While the world waits to see if Barbie 2 happen, the director and co-writer behind that billion-dollar feeling quietly making power moves in other cinematic realms. We’ve known that for a while Greta Gerwig is in the lead The Netflix Chronicles of Narnia reboot, but a new report reveals that the CS Lewis adaptation will get an IMAX showcase before it hits the streamer.
According to Puck Newssaid Gerwig Narnia movie “will hit about 1,000 IMAX screens worldwide on Thanksgiving Day 2026 and won’t appear on Netflix until Christmas,” with a two-week IMAX run guaranteed and an option to add a third if there’s enough audience interest . Also, “there’s a chance” Narnia may also play in some non-IMAX theaters before its streaming debut. Additionally, “Netflix is committed to marketing the IMAX release like a typical theatrical tentpole movie and recognition Narnia as a ‘Netflix/IMAX’ title from the start.
Puck reports that this deal is happening despite Netflix’s known preference against showing its movies in theaters—unless said screening is in service of drumming up awards nominations— because co-CEO Ted Sarandos realized the importance of “putting” Oscar nominee Gerwig , whose films besides Barbie including Little Girl and Bird Lady. He also wrote Disney’s upcoming live-action Snow White.
The outlet points out that 1,000 IMAX screens in two weeks is a wider and longer release than a similarly high-profile production on Netflix—Rian Johnson’s Onion Glass: Mystery of the Knife—Received back in 2022, and wondering if maybe more big directors will follow Gerwig’s example and push Netflix for similar deals. (You’d have to guess fans certainly wouldn’t consider a similar release strategy for Guillermo del Toro Frankensteinwhich is set to hit the streamer at some point this year.)
Are you excited to see Gerwig? Narnia on the big, big screen in 2026—or will you have to wait a few more weeks to stream it on Netflix?
