A harrowing incident aboard the Delhi Metro’s Blue Line has ignited a conversation about social responsibility and manners after a woman reported being repeatedly subjected to racist remarks by a toddler. The victim shared her experience on Reddit, drawing attention to the child’s mother’s disturbing behavior and apparent indifference.
The woman described how she offered part of her seat to an 8-9-year-old girl at the request of the child’s mother, who cited her daughter’s tantrums.
However, the situation quickly escalated when the boy started chanting derogatory phrases such as “chinki chinese chinki chinEse” as soon as they boarded the train. Initially dismissing the comments, the woman found the insults became increasingly audible once the boy sat next to her.
“I was in the women’s coach, and everyone was looking at me like I had done something wrong. I was very ashamed”, explained the woman. She expressed her disappointment that the boy’s mother remained oblivious to the situation, engrossed in her phone while her daughter continued the verbal harassment.
Choosing not to confront the boy or his mother for fear of escalating the situation, the victim stated, “I didn’t want to get into a fight with an unmannerly brat. My whole day was ruined because of it.”
Reflecting on the incident, the woman expressed her frustration at the normalization of such behavior in society, stating: “It’s not my fault that I’m seen like this. It’s not even the first time I’ve faced racism, but a literal kid passing comments to a stranger – that’s a NO NO NO!”
He criticized the mother’s inaction, stressing the importance of teaching children basic manners. “Mind you, from the looks of it, they looked very wealthy and educated, but nowadays, education doesn’t really justify manners,” he noted.
In his post, he urged parents and teenagers to inculcate better values in children to avoid similar incidents in the future. “If you’re a parent or teenager reading this, please teach your child some manners so they don’t throw these things at a random stranger,” he concluded.
Since then, the post has garnered significant attention, with many users sharing their thoughts and personal experiences. A user shared, “Man I saw someone calling me moti (fat) and I called her saying tere baap ka khaati hu kya (I don’t eat any of your father’s earnings). She had nothing to say and was shocked . that I had a retort instead of accepting and being ashamed.”
Reactions ranged from support for the woman to suggestions on how to deal with such situations in the future.
One commenter expressed frustration at the lack of accountability, saying: “You should have stepped on mom’s foot when you got up,” while another shared a similar experience of confronting a rude child.
