Acting German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said Thursday that U.S. President Donald Trump will “deduct under pressure” and change his tariff policy, Acting German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said on Thursday.

“That’s what I’ve seen, Donald Trump will succumb under pressure, and he corrected the announcement under pressure, but the logical result is that he also needs to feel the pressure at the time,” he said in a press conference.

“Now it needs to be put into Europe in the alliance with other countries, and then we will see who is the stronger person in this arm wrestling,” Habek said.

He added that in any case, allowing Trump to persevere or try to appease him is a successful strategy, noting that the response should be a “day of determination.”

The economy minister said strategically the purpose should be to avoid tariffs and trade wars, but the question is how to get there.

Elsewhere, outgoing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he believes Trump’s latest tariff decision is “basically wrong.”

Scholz said these measures are attacks on the global trade order and that “via bad thinking through decision-making” will lead to global economic suffering. He added that the U.S. government is on a path that will only lead to losers.

On Wednesday, Trump imposed a 20% tax on the EU, including the EU’s highest economy sign A difficult and enterprising “mutual tariff” policy.

Given its heavy reliance on trade, Germany is widely regarded as one of the countries with the largest tariffs.
