Instagram Reels is rolling out new features for US users while TikTok is banned


Instagram announced a timely update to its Reels video segment this morning, along with the news that the Supreme Court upheld the law that would ban TikTok in the US on January 19. The update, said Meta , will make it easier for users to discover content that friends and followers like on the platform and encourage users to start conversations about Reels content.

The company is poised to capture more TikTok users after the US ban, especially creators who rely on social media for revenue. Although a large group of TikTokers have already fled the Chinese app RedNote in protest of the ban, it is more difficult for creators to monetize their followers on an app that is mostly used by Chinese netizens, but not to US businesses and brands.

Meta, angling to capture the attention of TikTok users on Friday, announced that it has added a feature visible in the upper right corner of the Reels tab that makes it easier to see content that friends and fans have liked or commented on. follower It appears as a small banner with the profile pictures of those engaging with the content and a small heart icon or conversation bubble, to indicate what type of interaction they are having.

In addition, the company says it will introduce a new “reply bar” at the bottom of a reel that will allow users to quickly respond to content that their friends like. For example, the bar might prompt you to respond to a friend’s “Like” while their profile picture and heart float on the screen.

Meta said the feature will be launched in the US market to begin with.
