Iran’s foreign minister has arrived in Oman to negotiate on Iran’s nuclear program.

Abbas Araghchi told Iran’s state television that his country hopes to reach a “fair deal” as delegations from both countries prepare for negotiations.

U.S. President Donald Trump sent a letter to Iran’s supreme leader through the United Arab Emirates last month saying he hopes to reach a deal to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and to avoid military strikes between the United States and Israel.

Trump pulled the United States from a nuclear deal between Iran and the world’s major powers in 2018 and long said he would make a “better” deal. So far, Iran has rejected renegotiation of the agreement.

The discussions are the highest level since Trump’s first term, but it is unclear whether the two sides will sit in the same room.

“Our intention is to reach a fair and glorious agreement from an equal standpoint, and if the other party also comes from the same standpoint, then hope for a chance to have a preliminary understanding, which will lead to a path to negotiation.”

The team that followed was composed of experts, “are knowledgeable in this particular field and has a history of negotiation on this issue,” he added.

Aragic said the negotiations were “indirect” and were limited to their nuclear program issues.

Steve Witkoff, the U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East, led the U.S. delegation.

Trump revealed the upcoming talks during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the White House on Monday, who said on Tuesday that both leaders agreed that “Iran will have no nuclear weapons.”

Trump warned that if no deal was reached, the United States would use military power, and Iran repeatedly said it would not negotiate under pressure.

The U.S. president told reporters in the Oval Office on Monday that the meeting in Oman this weekend would be “very big”, and warned that it would be “a very bad day for Iran” if the negotiations were not successful.

Iran insists that its nuclear activities are totally peaceful and that it will never seek to develop or acquire nuclear weapons.

But since Trump pulled out of the 2015 deal, the deal will expire later this year – Iran has increasingly violated existing nuclear deals’ retaliation against U.S. sanctions restored seven years ago and has stockpiled high enough uranium to make several bombs.
