Jamie Smith wants to take on the role of T20 finisher as he looks to be England’s man all season long.
Having cemented his place as England’s Test wicket-keeper for 2024, Smith is now desperate to establish himself in the one-day internationals and T20s, despite an escorted tour of New Zealand during last month’s break.
He has seven ODI caps and caught the eye on his T20 debut in Chennai on Saturday, stepping out of the crease with confidence and picking up a six off his fourth ball as India spin By Varun Chakravarthy.
Although England were beaten 2-0 in five games after two heavy defeats, Smith’s 22 off 12 runs was all England needed from their sixth innings to the back end of their innings.
With Jacob Bethell unfit, Smith will take advantage of any opportunity he gets with his hands as he plays more of an experienced performer in the batting order. live.
“I want to play for England in all formats,” he said. “That’s the main goal. I see these games (as) I get the chance to try and show my skills and I want to do that.
“It’s good to have a defined role so everyone knows you’re going to be the No. 6 in T20s, which gives you more clarity to train and prepare.
“I played a very clear role in Tests, keeping wickets and batting seven. That made it easier to prepare. I’m confident I can go out and play any role I play.”
If he were to become an all-round regular, Smith could have a busy 12 months with the Champions Trophy next month before the Ashes home Test series against India and Australia in the summer.
The 24-year-old was therefore grateful to have some downtime before Christmas as his partner gave birth to their son Noah, meaning Smith had chosen England to play in New Zealand recently test series.
His decision brought the possibility of him losing a Test spot and Ollie Pope performed well as England claimed a 2-1 series victory, but Smith was delighted to take the risk.
“There are no regrets in that regard,” he said. “The six weeks I spent[at home]were the best six weeks I’ve ever had. It was a break and then some mornings and evenings!
“It’s nice to be away from games and busy schedules, which is always nice, and it’s a luxury you don’t get.
“I’m grateful for the support of the guys here and the England and Wales Cricket Board in general, the way they’ve developed, allowing me to make my own decisions without any pressure.”
Despite many of his England teammates in India coming forward and being snapped up by the Indian Premier League, Smith has refused to put his name forward for the November player auction.
Smith added: “Having a young family at home, there’s a lot of potential going away with England this year, there’s a lot of cricket and it’s my best exit this year.”
“Family has always been my priority and you’re on the road for a long time and I can spend any time at home. .
“Hopefully I can show my goals as a cricketer potentially IPL moving forward. It’s definitely something I want to try.”
