US President Joe Biden says he thinks he will defeat Donald Trump and win re-election in November.
Interviewed by USA Today Exclusive interviewHowever, Biden added that he was not sure he had the stamina to continue a four-year term.
“So far, so good,” the 82-year-old said. “But who knows what I’ll be like when I’m 86?”
In a wide-ranging interview with Susan Page, Biden also said he was still considering preemptive pardons for Donald Trump’s enemies, including former Republican congresswoman Liz Cheney and former top health officials Dr. Anthony Fauci.
In an interview published Wednesday, Biden said he was “very candid” with Trump about possible pardons during an Oval Office meeting shortly after the November election.
“I tried to make it clear that it wasn’t necessary and that his interest in going back and settling scores was counterintuitive,” Biden said, adding that Trump didn’t push back and just “basically just listened.”
Biden said his final decision will depend on who Trump chooses to serve in his Cabinet.
At the same meeting, Biden said Trump had “praise” for his economic record.
“He (Trump) thinks I’m going to leave with a good record,” the Democrat said.
The USA Today interview is Biden’s only exit interview to date with a print publication.
Media interviews with Biden have been tightly controlled by the White House – the president has not held a news conference since he dropped out of the race on July 21.

In an interview with USA Today, Biden said he believed he would win “based on the polls,” but acknowledged that his age could affect his tenure.
“When Trump runs for re-election, I really think I have the best chance of beating him. But when I’m 85, 86 years old, I don’t want to be president either,” Biden said. “But I don’t know. Who knows?”
