Former India opener Sunil Gavaskar expressed anger at not attending the post-match presentation ceremony after the fifth and final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy was introduced during the 1996-97 India-Australia Test series and named after Indian and Australian icons Sunil Gavaskar and Allan Border respectively.
Cricket Australia (CA) apparently planned the presentation in this way: Gavaskar If India retains the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Border will hand over the trophy to the Indian captain and if Australia wins, Border will also hand over the trophy to the Indian captain.
So the Indian legend stood at the boundary rope and watched as Border handed the trophy to the Australian skipper Pat Cummins The hosts won the Sydney Test to take the five-match series 3-1.
Code Sports (via The Indian Express ) quoted Gavaskar saying the same after his speech:
“Of course I’d love to be at the awards ceremony. After all this is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, it’s about Australia and India. I mean, I was there. It doesn’t matter to me that Australia wins when it comes to the awards, They played better and so they won because I am Indian (I did not present the trophy) and I was happy to present the trophy along with my good friend Alan Border.”
India are the past four Border-Gavaskar Trophy holders. However, Australia finally lifted the coveted trophy for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
“I like AB very much” – Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar recently expressed his disapproval of Alan Border He said their relationship began to develop in 1987 during MCC’s bicentennial celebrations.
The pair both scored over 10,000 runs in Test cricket and dominated the 1970s and 1980s with 61 centuries in their willows.
“I loved AB (Border) very much. Our relationship really developed when we both played for the rest of the world against MCC during the MCC Bicentennial Celebrations in 1987. We spent three weeks together, together Traveling and playing a few games before the game against MCC, we got really close and got to know each other, the culture and the people,” said Gavaskar (via Indian Express).
“A bit like what the IPL is doing now, bringing people from different countries together. I feel privileged, privileged and blessed that the series between India and Australia is named after us. Such an iconic series – It’s a blessing,” he added.
Come to what just ended 2024-25 Border Gavaskar TrophyIndia won the first Test match in Perth before Australia hit back hard to win three of the next four games.
