governor of south dakota Kristi Noem Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was sworn in as secretary of Homeland Security at his home on Saturday due to a scheduling hiccup earlier in the day.
The ceremony was originally scheduled to take place at 3 p.m. in the Indian Treaty Room in the Navy Department Wing of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C., but was postponed multiple times.
Noem shared the video on X just after 6:30 p.m.

“I am deeply honored to be sworn in as Secretary of State. Department of Homeland Security,” she wrote in the post. “Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was sworn in from home, which made the event even more meaningful. Thank you to President (Donald) Trump for trusting me to help keep America safe. “
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry Photos from the event were shared on X just before 6 p.m., expressing confidence in Noem taking on the role.
“Sharon and I were honored to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Secretary of Homeland Security @KristiNoem,” Landry wrote in the post. “America will be safer and stronger because of her and @realDonaldTrump. Donald Trump) leadership. Americans will be number one again! “
According to a Fox News reporter, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, Senator Bernie Moreno and Senator Mike Rounds attended the Indian Treaty Room to await the initial ceremony.
The swearing-in was delayed “due to a scheduling conflict,” Taylor Van Kirk, a spokesman for the vice president, told Fox News.
“We are excited about the work she will do to bring much-needed changes to the Department of Homeland Security and secure the border,” Kirk said.

She said one of Noem’s top priorities is to secure the southern border and fix the “broken immigration system.”
“The Trump Administration will once again empower our brave law enforcement officers to do their jobs and remove criminal aliens and illegal gangs from our country,” Noem wrote in a statement. We will fully equip our intelligence and law enforcement communities to detect and prevent terrorist threats and will provide rapid aid and disaster relief to Americans in crisis.”
The Trump administration has taken steps to secure the border, including deploying the military, restarting wall construction and ending the previous administration’s parole program.
Before being sworn in, the president loudly berated Noem at a rally in Las Vegas, describing her as “tough.”
“I am grateful to President Trump and the United States Senate for their confidence in me,” she wrote. “Together, we will ensure that America once again serves as a beacon of freedom, safety and security for generations to come.”
Prior to her new role, Noem served as the first female governor of South Dakota. She promised in 2021 not to accept any more immigrants from the Biden administration and to deploy the National Guard to the Texas border.
Noem is a rancher, farmer and small business owner who served in the South Dakota Legislature before being elected as South Dakota’s only member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
