“Its existence raises interesting questions about its purpose and the symbolic or possible ritual value it had for the people of this ancient community,” Professor Peter Bilinski said in a press release.

The archaeologists also noted that they found two different types of pottery at the site, calling the discovery “crucial” for the study of the Ubaid period.

The findings confirm that Bahra 1 is one of the oldest and largest known settlements in the Arabian Peninsula and the oldest known pottery production site in the Persian Gulf.

Excavators also uncovered small fragments of plants added to the clay when making pottery. Next, researchers will conduct archaeobotanical analysis of the plants to understand the local flora of the period.
