Illan Meslier was abandoned on Saturday after Leeds’ high-profile mistakes against Swansea.
Leeds boss Daniel Farke, who is under pressure to abandon the French, confirmed the news on Thursday.
After the hour mark, Meslier dropped the ball from the corner of Josh Tymon, and Swansea’s Harry Darling was going to fire and punish him for his mistakes.
Zan Vipotnik shot from the field in the 96th minute and then slid out the goalkeeper’s gloves in the draw on the Welsh side, denying that Leeds had a chance to improve with Sheffield United at the top of the division.
“I made a decision and talked to the goalkeeper and Karl Darlow will play on Saturday,” he told the club’s official website on Thursday.
“It’s important that we have a clear start to the week so Carl can focus on that.”
Darlow, 34, has not participated in the club’s league since December 29, 2023.
After the aforementioned draw, Farke refused to blame Meslier for the result.
“I’m far from punishing a player (in Meslier) because we win together, lose and attract together,” he said.
“After playing like this and heartbreaking performance, they don’t need a manager who puts the results on the player’s shoulders.
“If you admit it this way, it’s a heartbreaking moment, but it’s football. If you want to play sports, you don’t expect the sun to always shine.
“We had a great title at the last minute and the opponent had to suffer the disappointment we had today – Sunderland and Sheffield United were totally disappointed.
Analysis: Will this be Farke’s back rod?
David Prutton of Sky Sports on the Sky Sports EFL Podcast:
“It’s a team game, but when the goalkeeper makes such a mistake, it’s very, very hard.
“The fact that they allowed Swansea to re-enter the game, it was such a deep race, which really put the cats in a dove among Leeds fans.
“From a human point of view, you have to feel for him. This is not the first time. We saw the reaction of his teammates, and it was a natural reaction. We are all in a position where you can’t help yourself.
“If the goalkeeper does the job incorrectly and allows such a goal, it is necessary to ask a big question.
“I think there will be a big question, but does it create a pole for Daniel Farke’s back that he takes him out and everyone who steps in must be flawless and perfect? Otherwise, it’s not a reasonable decision to make.”
