Liverpool are reportedly keeping a close eye on Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez as they prepare for a January move.
according to Anfield WatchThe Reds have been scouting the Spanish midfielder extensively and have been impressed with his performances.
Gonzalez, he has Previously linked to Newcastle UnitedIn 2023, he joined Porto from Barcelona’s La Masia youth academy and quickly became a key player for the Portuguese giants. He is known for his passing, tactical awareness and versatility, allowing him to play both as a deep-lying playmaker and as a dynamic box-to-box midfielder. His impressive work rate and maturity have seen him excel this season.
In 15 league games, he scored 4 goals and 3 assists, and his overall contribution in all competitions this season is 5 goals and 5 assists. Despite being contracted to Porto until 2028, reports suggest Gonzalez has a €60m (£50m) release clause that Liverpool could trigger to secure his services.
Liverpool need to strengthen midfield
The Reds have been heavily linked with Martin Zubimendi heading into this season, with the number six considered one of the most important positions.
The Reds had agreed personal terms and were even reportedly willing to trigger his release clause, however, the player made a U-turn at the last minute, Rejected Liverpool and decided to stay at Real Sociedad.
It was a blow to Liverpool at the time as they failed to replace Fabinho and therefore went into the season without a proper six points.
But Ryan Gravenberch has emerged as the number six and has put in an incredible performance to become one of the best midfielders in the Premier League this season.
However, Liverpool are still in need of midfield reinforcements as Endo is the only other senior option in the role.
While Gonzalez is a more dynamic midfielder who is best suited in a box-to-box role rather than sitting in a number six role, he can still be an excellent addition. His arrival will ease Gravenberch’s workload and allow the Reds to rotate effectively in what will be a demanding season.
Liverpool could make a move in January as Gonzalez’s release clause comes into effect. If Liverpool are able to sign the Spaniard, it would be another smart addition to a midfield already bolstered by the likes of Szoboszlai, Alexis McAllister and Gravenberg.
