Making two Nazi salutes may have won Elon Musk some fans in the dark corners of the internet, but the chances are slim that his BitChute and Rumble supporters will be able to recover the traffic that is about to disappear in X. After Musk’s “I give you my heart” gesture that sounded like a Sieg Heil salute, several major subreddits on Reddit banned links to X.
The ban covers basically every subreddit category and will cut X links from a significant source of traffic, as some of the communities boast millions of subscribers. The subreddit r/TwoXChromosomes, which has more than 14 million members and is one of the largest participating in the protest, prohibited X links (as well as Facebook, Instagram, and Threads) and encourages users to report any link or screenshot from Musk’s platform so it can be removed.
The movement spread to different sectors of Reddit. Game subreddits include r/Nintendo, r/magicTCG, r/Padulgan2and r/KingdomHearts everyone moved to ban X links. Other major subreddits including those for the Smash Bros., Halo, Counter-Strike, and Dungeons and Dragons communities actively poll their members to decide whether X gets the boot, per TheGamer.
Sports communities, too, are taking steps to prevent X links from being shared. The subreddit for Formula One racing fans, r/formula1 and its more than four million users ended up on Musk’s platform, as did the Liverpool fans r/LiverpoolFC. Including subreddits r/NFL and r/hockey is considering following suit, which is a big deal given that a lot of sports content is driven by reports originating on Twitter.
The moderator of r/Military offered perhaps the most succinct and decisive ruling on the X posts. While other communities debate whether they want to ix out X links, u/DreamsAndSchemes made the call without the need for any consultation and offered the following explanation for the ban: “Fuck that guy.”
While the subreddit moderators and community members seem to have decided that if it looks like a duck, talks like a duck, and enthusiastically does the goose step twice in front of a large audience, then it’s safe. you think this is what you think. is the.
But others are less ready to condemn Musk. The Anti-Defamation League called Musk’s move to Seig Hiel was “an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute,” of which Musk thanks the response group. Ben Shapiro came to Musk’s defense via share a picture of the two of them on a visit to Auschwitz, quickly abandoning the reason that Musk made the visit because he promotes antisemitic conspiracy theories and allowing the Nazis to return to X after being banned before.
However, the traffic that X has hit will come from the loss of major subreddits as an aggregator would be important, but it’s not clear that it’s very important to Musk. He seems content to drive the platform into the ground as long as it allows him to accumulate power—and because he’s apparently got it. office space in the West Winghe seems to be about as close to the levers of power as he can get.
