Map: Earthquake near Papue Nova Guinea encourages a tsunami warning

A strong earthquake of 6.9 Magnituda was hit in the Solomon Sea on Saturday, according to the geological survey of the United States. For some parts of the Papua New Guinea coast, a “threat from tsunami” was issued.

The US warning system for the tsunami said waves from 3 to 10 feet above normal tide levels are possible near an earthquake epicenter. The system did not issue warnings for places elsewhere in the Pacific.

Temblor happened at 6:04 pm by Papua Nova Guinea about 121 miles southeast of Kimbe, Papua Nova Guinea, shows data from USGS.

While seismologists are reviewing available data, they can revise the reported earthquake size. Additional information collected about earthquakes can also list USGS scientists to update the earthquake map.
