Former Dallas Mavericks majority shareholder Mark Cuban made an appearance on Friday’s “Stephen A. Smith” Luka Doncic Exchange the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis’ headlines.

The industry launched a shock wave across the league, especially given Doncic was injured at the time, despite being a player of the generation, and Davis Age six years old. Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison pointed out the need for teams to improve their defense, an area where Doncic doesn’t fully shine.

After the deal ended, the Mavericks were hit by a wave of injuries – including Davis himself and star guard Kyrie Irving. Still, Davis was on the court and the Mavericks scored 5-1 in six games. During this period, Davis averaged 19.5 points, 9.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists.

Cuba told Smith that the agreement was nothing more than a “handshake” and ultimately did not enter the official paperwork.

“It’s a handshake agreement, … I’m trying to include it in the contract. In fact, the NBA refuses. They basically say it’s between you and the new ownership, … they’re going in their own direction.” (22:48 points)

Smith then asked if Doncic would still be in Dallas, and if Cuba was in charge of the basketball decision, Cuba responded:

“I think he’s here. Yes.”

Mark Cuban also said he would never pull the trigger on the trade Doncic, sharing that GM Nico Harrison only called him after the deal was completed.

“I was like, ‘You’re asking me, right? It’s not done yet,” Cuba recalled Harrison’s conversation. “He was like, ‘No, done.’ I was like, “Okay. “You know, there’s nothing to talk about.

“I won’t do that. And, you know, thank you for calling me.”

The Mavericks have struggled since the trade, falling to 38-40, taking all kinds of injuries, but still sticking to the No. 9 seed in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, the Lakers have soared, and as of Friday, the Lakers climbed to third place 47-30.
