On Thursday, The New York Times published a about the rise to power of Stephen Miller, a longtime Donald Trump loyalist known for his hardline views on immigration. Normally, a story like that doesn’t get much attention in the tech press. But the piece opened with an anecdote about Mark Zuckerberg that immediately raised eyebrows.

The story details a recent meeting Miller had with Zuckerberg when the Meta CEO traveled to Mar-a-Lago last year. According to The TimesZuckerberg — who will soon reject Meta’s first effort and channel programs – “blamed his former chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg, for an inclusivity initiative at Facebook that encouraged self-expression among employees in the workplace.”

That line started a new round of speculation (and some anger) in tech circles. Sandberg, who left Meta and became famous after writing her women’s workplace manifesto Leaning Onknown for his former close partnership with Zuckerberg over Facebook. Zuckerberg blamed his former top lieutenant for promoting “inclusivity” at his company, even among longtime observers of the company.

“He always knew who Mark Zuckerberg was and covered for him,” New York Times Reporter Sheera Frankel, who co-wrote a book about Facebook’s dominance, observed . “The question is whether he’ll continue to do so when he’s clearly been thrown under the (Trump) bus.” Journalist and longtime tech pundit Kara Swisher as well that “the people I spoke to tonight from the Mark/Sheryl Facebook era were shocked but not surprised that he blamed her.”
