Nottingham Forest and Arsenal have both set their sights on Matheus Cunha, but will Wolves’ ace be sold? Sky Sports News’ Danyal Khan explains the situation…
Can Matheus Cunha stay at Wolves this transfer window?
Two things can be true at the same time.
Matheus Cunha is attracting interest from the likes of Nottingham Forest and Arsenal, but why wouldn’t he? He has been showing huge improvement in his performances at Wolves over the past 18 months or so.
A versatile striker with incredible dribbling ability, he is a player with the potential to consistently contribute double figures in goals and assists every season – but as Southampton and Fulham have As his victories have shown – he can create miracles out of nothing. Almost priceless.
But as far as I understand, the Brazilian is not for sale in this window.
Despite their interest, Wolves have not made any offers for him, nor have they made any contact with other clubs regarding Cunha, and they are not interested in selling such a key player at this stage of the season – especially With so little time left.
Their business model is likely to see big sales in the summer window in the hope of funding more revenue, so Cunha’s future is likely to come again in the summer, but in January Wolves’ position was clear that he Will not be sold.
What about his contract situation?
It’s a little subtle and complicated. Cunha has two and a half years left on his contract and a new deal is on the table for him to sign.
However – he is unlikely to sign now.
Whether it’s because of the noise around him or his personal ambitions, we’ll have to wait and see, but Wolves are relaxed about the situation.
It is hoped that giving him a new contract will be more of a reward for his recent performances, which will also be Cunha’s first time as team captain.
It’s also worth noting that there was no financial pressure on Wolves to sell him in January – they made more than £90m from the sales of Max Kilman and Pedro Neto last summer.
That Cunha has yet to sign on the dotted line is not expected to have any impact on his immediate future, and I think from Wolves’ perspective they will be hoping that the noise surrounding the Brazilian will calm down once the deadline passes.
How do Wolves fans feel?
It’s never an ideal situation to read or hear that one of your star players has been linked with a move away – especially when the team is struggling to get results on the pitch and in a relegation battle.
Wolves fans are experiencing a sense of deja vu as some fans may compare Cunha to when Wolves sold Morgan Gibbs-White to Nottingham Forest a few seasons ago.
My own thought is that this is very different. For Gibbs-White, yes, Wolves were unwilling to sell at the time, but after attending a press conference with then-Wolves manager Bruno Lage, he kept saying the price Wolves were willing to sell for. can be clearly seen in .
The time and circumstances were different too – it was the summer of 2022, the season had just begun, and I think at that time an offer of over £40m seemed like a pretty good offer for the young midfielder.
However, as mentioned earlier, Wolves’ Premier League safety is in serious danger, losing a star striker on limited time to replace him, and you can imagine the impact on the team, Vito Pereira, and the fans. What adverse effects will it have.
Fans are also dissatisfied with Wolves chairman Jeff Shi and others – this has been reflected in the Wolves’ recent games. The lack of visible investment while increasing ticket prices has led many to question the running of the club by Chinese company Fosun International.
However, with the club’s Premier League security in serious doubt this season, if Wolves do press on, perhaps it will shock the board into adjusting their recruitment model in future windows.
But that’s for the future. Ultimately, Cunha’s situation is an unnecessary distraction that everyone associated with Wolves can do regardless of their fight to stay in the Premier League.
