An activist group recently used the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s grant database to uncover the school’s ties to Israel’s military programs. As a result, the university closed the database.
The MIT Coalition for Palestine recently published a booklet titled “MIT Science for Genocide” where it outlines the school’s various relationships to the Israeli Ministry of Defense. The brochure claims that Israel has invested as much as $3.7 million in the school as a means of researching various defense initiatives. The Intercept reports that those projects include “research partnerships in underwater surveillance, missile detection, and drone algorithms.” The report also shows close ties between the school and Israel’s defense contractors—including one that makes most of the country’s killer drones.
While student activists continue to use open-access software to investigate Israel-linked grant activity at MIT, the school has deactivated the program, Rich Solomon, a Coalition member and MIT graduate student told the The Intercept. “MIT has engaged in a sustained and organized campaign of disinformation and propaganda to silence and suppress this information,” Solomon added.
MIT spokeswoman Sarah McDonnell said the following when reached for comment by The Intercept: “We respect that there are diverse views in that group on any number of topics, and as a general practice the our office does not comment to the media about individually held and freely expressed views of particular students or alumni.” McDonnell added: “MIT and its leadership are committed to promoting student welfare, protecting free speech, and responding to policy violations as appropriate.”
Done 40,000 Palestinians Reportedly killed as a result of Israel’s attack on Gaza, which is the majority women and childrenaccording to a UN estimate. Some estimates put the death toll higher. A study in The Lancet Site Acquisition the death toll could rise to over 100,000 as a result of Israel’s destruction of hospitals and homes, which could lead to deaths from disease, starvation, and exposure.
The terrible headlines related to the conflict only continue to rise. Last February, Haaretz revealed that the IDF runs a Telegram channel dedicated to photos and videos of dead Palestinians, where it they are called “roaches.” Recently, a doctor working in Gaza admitted that this is the first time he “holds the brain of a child” in his hands. Many reports say indiscriminate killing of civilians by Israeli forces—a claim that disbelieves some groups but, when you think about it, seems pretty obvious (unless you can argue that tens of thousands of women and children are Hamas agents). In addition, it is reported that Israel killed more journalists (128) last year than any other country in the last 100 years.
Commentators have called Israel’s campaign a “genocide,” and some Biden administration officials have fled the White House over the government’s handling of the crisis. The country, which continues to receive a continuous flow of arms and funds from the US, that is currently being tested for violating the Geneva Convention of the Hague.
