Tariffs are widely criticized worldwide as they threaten to put the global economy into recession.

Executive officials said more than 50 countries have directly contacted the White House for trade negotiations after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed extensive punitive tariffs.

The tariffs last week caused nearly $6 trillion in U.S. stock value to fall, and suffered a blow from global markets, attracting attention worldwide and raising concerns about a potential recession. But the Trump administration downplayed that and had potential further disastrous economic impacts.

Meanwhile, investors were nervously awaiting public deals for U.S. deals after Wall Street sold out last week, expecting another week of turmoil as other countries react. The Asian market will open in the next few hours and look forward to a tough day.

In a series of Sunday’s talk show interviews, Trump’s top economic adviser defended the tariffs, describing it as a strategic move to strengthen the U.S. position in global trade.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed that more than 50 countries have begun negotiations with the United States since the tariffs were announced on Wednesday, but did not disclose the countries involved.

Bessent claims the tariffs give Trump “the biggest leverage” even though their impact on the U.S. economy remains uncertain. He believes concerns about the recession cited unexpected growth in the United States.

The initial 10% “baseline” tariffs came into effect at U.S. seaports, airports and customs warehouses, which led Trump to completely reject the tariff rates jointly agreed upon after World War II.

Nevertheless, economists warn that tariffs could lead to a decline in U.S. GDP, with JPMorgan Chase economists increasing its growth rate from 1.3% to a 0.3% drop.

Tariffs aimed at putting pressure on foreign governments to make concessions have also sparked retaliatory taxes, including high taxes from China, raising concerns about the global trade war.

U.S. allies such as Taiwan, Israel, India and Italy have expressed interest in negotiating with the United States to avoid tariffs.

Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te provided zero tariffs as the basis for talks, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sought to reduce tariffs on Israeli goods.

Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to impose tariffs, with a higher “countdown” responsibility expected to take effect on Wednesday.

Critics raised concerns about the approach to tariffs, especially after applying it to some remote uninhabited territory.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick defended the strategy, claiming it aims to prevent states from evading tariffs through loopholes.
