Three-time former lightweight champion Mairis Briedis predicts David Morrell’s upbringing as a Cuban boxer will help him defeat David Bay on February 1 David Benavidez.
Benavidez Don’t bully Morel Just like he did in 168 fights against smaller, weaker and older fighters. Morel is the same size, younger, stronger, and won’t be bullied like the super middleweights who were beaten by Benavidez.
For years, fans viewed “Mexican Monster” Benavidez as a weight juggernaut who gamed the system by collapsing to compete against smaller fighters below his massive light heavyweight/cruiser weight class.
Benavidez moved up to 175 in his last fight on June 15 against Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
Can Morel shock the world?
Briedis said “everyone” believed WBC interim light heavyweight champion Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) would beat Morel (11-0, 9 KOs), but He thought his Cuban background was too much for the “WBC.” “Mexican Monster” headlines T-Mobile Arena.
Melis said Morell can fight from the outside, can throw with the power, and can also fight inside. During his time with the Cuban national team, he saw a variety of fighting styles. So what Benavidez brings to this fight is nothing new to him.
Morel arguably had a better game than Benavidez in Cuba, where he faced the two-time Olympic gold medalist Julio Cesar La Cruz. The fighter would be a nightmare for Benavidez due to his size, strength and technical ability.
Politics in the ring?
One issue raised by the Benavidez-Morrell fight is refereeing. As Briedis points out, Benavidez is from the United States and Morel is from Cuba. He mentioned politics. If the fight goes ahead, will the more popular fighter Benavidez (who has a huge fan base in the U.S.) get the decision, even if he looks to lose?
In his last fight against Ukraine’s Oleksandr Gvozdyk in Las Vegas last June, Benavidez won the title in what appeared to be a close contest. A unanimous decision in 12 rounds. Gvozdyk looked like he was winning five or six rounds in that fight, but the Nevada judges gave it to Benavidez with this lopsided score: 116-112, 117-111, and 119- 109.
I watched the game and the score was 114-114. Benavidez appeared to lose one of the first six rounds and then the final five as Gvozdyk used power punches against the tired “Mexican Monster.” So, if the Benavidez-Morrell fight makes it to the scorecards, will Morel get similar treatment? Will he need a knockout to defeat the hugely popular Benavidez, who has a huge fan base in Nevada and a crowd at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to support him?
Cuban school education
“Everyone thought Benavidez would win by TKO, but I think Morel is from Cuba, and Cuba is a very strong boxer. It’s a national boxing sport,” Myres Briedis ( Mairis Briedis) in his Youtube channel, analyzing the February 1 match between David Benavidez and David Morrell.
“Morrell is a very smart guy, a young man who can fight from a distance and also like a boxer. It’s two boxers meeting in the ring. I think Morel is my prediction .They showed some new stuff for Benavidez, speed, powerful punches, and some interesting Cuban skills.
“My prediction is that Morel wins by unanimous decision. Benavidez fights a stronger opponent than Morel. I mean, Morel is not fighting very strong guys. I expect Morel to I was able to win by unanimous decision.
In America, there is some petty politics. Why because he (Benavidez) is from the United States and his fans are from the United States. Morel is Cuban and has loved boxing since he was a child. “
Morel grew up fighting better fighters than Benavidez in Cuba. He also had a tougher life than Benavidez. His growth, combined with his superior speed, strength, athleticism and technical skills, gives him a huge advantage in this fight.
“The winner (of Benavidez vs. Morel) will fight either Beterbiev or Bivol. Benavidez-Morrell will be a very tough fight and the next step is The toughest fight is against Beterbiev or Bivol,” Briedis said.
