MSF discovers malnourished children in Greek immigration camps, urges action | Immigration News

Doctors without borders are alert to malnutrition in children in Greek immigration facilities.

Doctors without borders (MSF) The first cases of malnutrition children have raised new concerns about the status of the facility in an immigration camp on Samos, Greece.

The medical charity said on Monday that its doctors have diagnosed six children from six months to six years old in Syria and Afghanistan, with acute Malnutrition Urgent care is required.

Although MSF cannot confirm whether their condition is directly caused by the life of the camp, it warns that insufficient food and health care puts children at serious risks.

“No child should suffer from malnutrition due to systemic neglect,” said Christina Psarra, director general of Missouri MSF, noting that about a quarter of camp residents are children.

The Greek Ministry of Immigration and Asylum dismissed widespread malnutrition concerns, insisting that the cases were isolated. “In any case, due to living conditions, malnutrition is poor,” it said, adding that asylum seekers receive three meals a day.

Greece is the center of Europe’s 2015-16 annual immigration crisis, and has surged again this year among arrivals. Almost one-third of migrants who arrived in Southern Europe from the Middle East and Africa in 2024 landed in Greece, according to UN data.

The European Union-funded Camp Samos Camp opened in 2021 and is a high safety facility surrounded by barbed wire. It replaced the overcrowded Vasi Camp, which once housed 7,000 people in dirty conditions. Six malnourished children who have no borders and no international powers arrive at the camp.

Amnesty International has previously condemned the conditions on the spot and called them “inhumanity and depravity” when it was overcrowded, water shortage and lack of basic services.

In December, a UN human rights expert criticized Greece for failing to identify victims of trafficking in camps.

MSF urges Greek authorities to theme Ensure proper pediatric care and nutritional support is provided to asylum seekers. It also called for the resumption of the refugee financial aid that was suspended in June last year.
