Newcastle vs Wolves: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

Newcastle United welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to St James’ Park in the Premier League on Wednesday night on the back of an eight-game winning streak.

The Magpies were made to work harder than expected at the weekend after falling early behind to League Two Bromley in the third round of the FA Cup. Lewis Miley’s belting equalizer settled any Geordie nerves before they pulled away in the second half.

Sunday’s win came after they lost Armory 2-0 away from home in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final – a victory to complement five straight wins Premier League. A significant improvement in their form has left them with legitimate aspirations of returning to the Champions League.

Wolves’ objectives in the second half of the season are not as attractive, with Premier League survival their primary objective.

They, too, advanced to the fourth round The FA Cup After Vitor Pereira named a strong starting XI at Bristol City. Pereira has quickly turned Wolves into a team to watch, but they were beaten by Nottingham Forest for the first time under his tutelage last week.

Their position towards the drop zone remains uncertain, with Ipswich’s recent production leaving them level on points with the West Midlanders.

Alexander Isaac

Alexander Isak’s absence was enforced at the weekend due to a thigh injury, but Eddie Howe is hopeful his superstar forward will be fit for the visit of Wolves.

Sven Boatman, Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock are all carrying knocks, but all three are not expected to miss Wednesday’s game.

Anthony Gordon was brought on for the second half against Bromley after Harvey Barnes succumbed to a muscle injury, and the former Leicester winger is set to join him on the sidelines. Barnes joins Jamaal Lascelles, Callum Wilson, Emile Kraft and Nick Pope on the treatment table.

Newcastle Predicted Lineup vs Wolves (4-3-3): Dubravka; Livramento, Schar, Burn, Hall; Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton; Murphy, Isaac, Gordon.

Mathews Cunha

Wolves will be boosted by the return of star forward Mathias Cunha, who served the second of his two-game suspension at Ashton Gate. Brazilian Pereira will return to the XI and Jorgen Strand will work alongside Larsson.

The heart of Wolves’ defense could be a Premier League debut for January arrival Emmanuel Agbadou, but he will not be partnered by Craig Dawson or Toti Gomes, who are both injured.

Nelson Semedo is also likely to miss out with a thigh injury, while Sasa Kalajdzic, Boubaker Traor, Enso Gonzalez and Yersan Mosquera are sidelined with long-term knee problems.

Wolves Predicted Lineup vs Newcastle (3-4-2-1): this; Doherty, Agbadou, Bueno; R. Gomes, Andre, J. Gomes, Ait-Nouri; Cunha, Hwang; Larson

Cunha’s return is a big boost for the visitors, who missed his ability in goal against Forest last Monday. Wolves have emerged as a fearless outfit under Pereira, and they are unlikely to come to St James’ Park with the aim of claiming points.

However, an adventurous wolf will be welcomed by the hosts, who are scoring for fun at the moment. If they are given the space to run, Hove’s superb front three will take advantage. Their midfield continues to perform at an incredibly high level, and Newcastle’s defense is reaching levels comparable to their 2022/23 glory.

This is shaping up to be a back-and-forth contest with plenty of goals, and the Magpies should continue their excellent run.

Prediction: Newcastle 3-1 Wolves
