Novak Djokovic resumes his showdown with Carlos Alcaraz in the Australian Open quarterfinals on Tuesday, a clash between two generations of tennis.
Djokovic, arguably the greatest player in the history of the sport, is aiming for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title.
Alcaraz, meanwhile, is at the forefront of a new wave of rising stars in tennis. He is still only 21, but has already won Wimbledon twice as well as the French Open and the US Open.
The Australian Open is the only Grand Slam outside Alcaraz’s collection and he hopes to complete his career Grand Slam in Melbourne this year.
If he can do this, he will become the first young player to ever accomplish this feat.
The quarter-finals will take place on Tuesday at 9.30am and you can Follow in the live blog sky sports Websites and Apps.
In 2023, Alcaraz defeated Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, winning in five thrilling sets to earn a memorable victory. Last year, the Spaniard defeated Djokovic in the Wimbledon final to win again.
But Djokovic prevailed in their last meeting, beating Alcaraz in a thrilling Olympic final at Roland Garros last summer to win his first gold medal.
sky sports tennis Commentator Jonathan Overund said this quarter-final match was “Deserving of a final, worthy of any final, but here they are in the quarter-finals.”
“They’ve had a lot of great battles in the past, especially the Wimbledon final two years ago, the Cincinnati final that summer which was pretty incredible and of course the 2024 Olympic final on the clay courts at Roland Garros, That’s last season’s game in a lot of people’s eyes,” Overlund continued.
“These two guys have reached an unbelievable level. The shooting, the defensive ability, the movement of these two – no doubt – and at the end Djokovic was in tears when he finished the Golden Slam and Alcaraz Tears of emotion as he came so close to winning gold for Spain.
“If we come close to repeating the standard of tennis we played that day in this match then we will be in for a treat in Melbourne.”
“I know my weapons”
This will be their earliest meeting in a major.
“I think this is not the right player to play in the quarterfinals,” Alcaraz said.
“In the quarter-finals I’m going to approach the game like I did against him before, let’s see.
“I know my weapons. I know I can play good tennis with him and I can beat him.”
Djokovic said of Alcaraz: “He is a very dynamic, explosive player. His talent and charisma are incredible. His game is exciting, but it is not so good against him.”
“I’m expecting a big fight, like we are in most games against each other.”
Murray vs Ferrero: A battle of coaches
Djokovic has a new source of guidance for this tournament, hiring retired superstar Andy Murray as his new coach.
Alcaraz is coached by another former world number one, Juan Carlos Ferrero.
and sky sports tennis Overlund said: “Murray actually beat Ferrero three times, all in 2009, including at Wimbledon that year.
“Two very astute readers of the game, we know the great job Ferrero has done over the years with Alcaraz, but we’ve seen the impact Murray has had on Djokovic.
“The potential for this great short-term coaching arrangement is there for all to see and Murray will absolutely relish the opportunity to engineer Alcaraz’s downfall. I think the big question is whether he’s trying to tinker with anything in particular.
“Murray may bring some subtle adjustments to Djokovic’s counterattack game.
“We know how good he is, but can he see some gaps in the Alcaraz backline to try to dominate the game and stop the Spaniards from picking up points.”
Alcaraz Services
The Spaniard is 16 years younger than Djokovic, so age is in his favor, but his play was a bit inconsistent last season and he is reshaping his serve.
“This is the first time they’ve met since Alcaraz adjusted his serve,” Overund said.
“We’ve seen an increase in speed, an increase in effectiveness, the changes they’ve made in the offseason are very evident in the game. Any impatience we saw from Carlos before is gone and it’s a much smoother process. .” Now he seems to be able to generate that “pop” with it.
“It all seems to be working in his favor, but will it be equally effective? Against the greatest returner, against Djokovic, there’s a slight increase in effectiveness.
“I don’t think Djokovic will have any special impact as he is a great returner.”
Will Djokovic win a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam?
“I believe Djokovic is capable of winning and logic says his best chance is his next chance at this Australian Open and then you add in the element of Andy Murray and his coaching corner,” said sky sports tennis’ over.
“This is Djokovic’s chance to break the record. He’s three games away from breaking the record.
“There’s a chance he’ll have to beat Alkaraz, Alexander Zverev and Yannik Sinner in consecutive games, which will be very tough, but the odds were stacked against him from the start and after getting 25 At the Grand Slam moment, who knows? If he wins the trophy, he might even retire on the spot.
“I have to let Djokovic repeat what he did in Paris and beat Alcaraz again.”
