Brighton took the lead inside five minutes when Mitoma beat the offside trap on the left side of Carlos Baleba’s long ball and his pass fed the unmarked Minter for a simple finish.

Midway through the first half, United were awarded a penalty as Brighton tried to take the ball out of their defence, but goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen’s pass fell poorly and the ball fell to Joshua Zirkzee in the penalty area.

Baleba put his arm on the striker’s shoulders, who fell to the ground. Referee Peter Banks pointed to it and Fernandez had no problem finding the equalizer.

Brighton thought they were ahead again seven minutes into the second period when United failed to convert a low free-kick into the box and Pedro finished. But a VAR review ruled that Jan-Paul van Herk had kicked Diogo Dalot’s foot during the melee.

The visitors did have a second chance, however, when Mitoma stretched at the back post ahead of United defender Nussel Mazraoui to turn in Minter’s tempting cross.

Brighton then scored a third through Onana’s horrific error to secure the game and hand United their tenth league defeat.

Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur’s poor season took another hit as they lost 3-2 to relegation-beaten Everton. But Nottingham Forest’s title challenge has become stronger after a 3-2 victory over bottom-placed Southampton.
