Player rating as Rafinha stars in Clásico thumping

Barcelona claimed their first trophy of the season with a 5-2 win over arch-rivals Real Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana final on Sunday night.

A barely convincing first half was bookended by sporadic breaks from both sides. Real MadridKylian Mbappe broke the deadlock with a superb individual goal just five minutes later. However, by the time Alejandro Bald completed the forward thrust in the final ten minutes added to the first half, Barcelona were leading 4–1.

After 22 minutes Lamin Yamal’s precise poke canceled out Mbappe’s early opener into the far corner. Robert Lewandowski Rafinha put Barcelona ahead with a penalty in the 36th minute shortly before the Catalans went into a 3-1 lead.

The Brazilian needed just three seconds-and-a-half minutes to catch up BarcelonaFive in the evening to taste. Bursting behind Madrid’s reshuffled backline, Rafinha had already beaten Aurélien Choumeni but had time to get past the makeshift centre-back for fun before picking out the bottom corner.

Madrid, as they’ve proven time and time again, won’t go gentle into a good night. Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny was sent off for lunging at Mbappe just before the hour-mark. From that very free-kick, Rodrigo found the top corner to reduce the deficit to 2-5.

Barcelona’s ten men clung to their advantage, out to lift the first title of Hensi Flick’s tenure while Madrid were left to lick their wounds.
