Player rating as the last gasp Nunez stings the bee

Darwin Nunez’s stoppage-time break earned Liverpool a dramatic 2-0 win over Brentford in a thoroughly entertaining Premier League clash.

Liverpool were frustrated for most of the match by a resilient Brentford and their sloppiness almost proved costly. But substitute Nunez, who manager Arne Sloat accepted pre-game Struggle to get the bestMade a huge impact off the bench as his brace guided the Reds to a decisive victory.

Slott’s side have conceded early goals in their last two Premier League Outings and found themselves behind within five minutes as Mikael Damsgaard inexplicably failed to convert from several yards out with the goal gaping.

Ryan Gravenberch forced Mark Flecken into an impressive save Liverpool looked to punish Brentford‘s futility, but the Dutchman’s long-range effort was turned around the post by his international teammate.

Both sides continued to threaten in the final third as they looked for an opener and Dominik Soboszlai came close to handing Liverpool the lead. The Hungarian launched a venomous strike from 25 yards that crashed against the top of the crossbar, much to the home side’s relief.

Brentford were let off the hook again just four minutes later as a sweeping counter-attack left the home side exposed, but Cody Gakpo’s poor effort from six yards failed to test the loose Flakan as Liverpool wasted another promising chance before the break.

Liverpool continued to push past the Brentford goal after the restart without too much work in the Brentford goal, but referee Andy Medley rightly waved away a penalty appeal following the Colombian’s subsequent dive before Luis Diaz forced the Brentford stopper into a save.

Brentford refused to sit deep and simply soak up the pressure, pushing numbers forward at every possible opportunity. Brian Mbuyomo and substitute Kevin Sheade both tested Alisson in quick succession and Liverpool had just over 15 minutes remaining.

It looked like it wasn’t going to be Liverpool’s day at the Gtech Community Stadium but Nunez proved the difference-maker in stoppage time. Scoring in the 91st and 93rd minutes secured three vital points for the Reds, the under-fire striker’s clinical efforts letting the spirited Bees down.
