Player Ratings as Citizens collapse to defeat in Paris

Paris Saint-Germain beat Manchester City 4-2 in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

This was billed as the showcase event of Matchday 7 despite both sides struggling in Europe, the stakes only heighten the occasion. PSG got off to a bright start as 19-year-old Dzire Dou tested Ederson’s palms early, while City had long breakthroughs.

Kevin De Bruyne saved Gianluigi Donnarumma for a header that was easily saved by the Italian from Erling Haaland after some neat work from Phil Foden.

The hosts’ concerted work without the ball meant every build-up sequence was a slog for City, who needed perfection (or a bit of luck) to move upfield. Towards the end of the half a slick pattern saw Savinho drop back but Donnarumma saved again.

Then, just before the break, PSG thought they would have taken an arguably deserved lead through Achraf Hakimi, but Nuno Mendes was ruled offside in the build-up following VAR intervention.

Some people suggest that the opening period was ‘cough’ but the second half was anything but. city After scoring twice after the restart, Cruise looked to be in control, with Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland scoring from close range, but PSG Responded instantly, and they were back on the level on the hour.

Bradley Barkola inspired the hosts, linking up with Ousmane Dembele after the winger had led Matthews Nunes for the dead, before rebounding Du’s effort, which crashed off the bar past Ederson.

All the momentum was on Enrique’s side, and City failed to settle for 2-2. The fifth goal was only going one way, and the superb Joao Neves struck the decisive blow as he headed home a PSG free-kick at the back post. Shellshocked, Guardiola’s side failed to respond and Goncalo Ramos added gloss to the scoreline with the last kick of the game.

City now need a matchday eight win to move into the playoff round mix.
