Player ratings as the Hammers reach the League Cup semi-finals

FROM BRISBANE ROAD – Tottenham Hotspur were left to pick up the pieces on Monday night as a 2-1 win at West Ham saw them dumped out of this year’s League Cup.

The Hammers will now come forward Women’s Super League (WSL) leaders Chelsea In the semi-final stage of the tournament on 5 February.

An early goal from striker Martha Thomas in the first ten minutes helped Spurs find their rhythm as the first half wore on.

Centre-back Claire Hunt was instrumental on numerous occasions at the top of West Ham’s midfield, feeding the ball into the feet of Spurs’ forward attacking line.

Chances of note included Thomas and Hayley Raso hitting the woodwork twice, as well as Bethany England’s numerous efforts being stopped in their tracks by Hammers goalkeeper Megan Walsh.

However, things quickly turned sour after Serena Puebel cruised past Eleanor Heaps one-on-one with five minutes to go in the first half, following an Emma Harris cross.

West Ham’s equalizer was used to wear down Spurs’ backline. Molly Bartip went on to lose to Puebel. It was a set piece though with Spurs trailing 2-1 a minute before half-time.

Kirsty Smith’s ball into the box apparently went unnoticed and glided into the right corner of the net, leaving Heaps stunned.

The second half passed with little action. Spurs failed to intensify their efforts as West Ham protected their lead.

It was England with the most promising shot on target, but his wide effort was well saved by Walsh. As the game entered its final minutes, it was clear that Spurs had conceded defeat.

Rehan Skinner will certainly be pleased with his side’s performance, as they look set to face them in their third League Cup semi-final in their history.
