Opponents of U.S. President Donald Trump and his adviser billionaire Elon Musk joined the U.S. rally to protest the government’s actions to reform and expand the president’s power.
More than 1,200 “hands-on” rallies are expected on Saturday, with organizers expecting the largest single-day mobilization against the government’s recent moves.
Protest venues include the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where organizers expect more than 20,000 people to attend, as well as locations in 50 U.S. states.
According to Washington, D.C., Al Jazeera’s Mike Hanna said the crowd was dissatisfied with the government’s enforcement behavior and the restructuring led by Musk’s Department of Efficiency (DOGE).
These reforms have resulted in the cancellation of more than 200,000 federal positions and significantly reduced benefits, especially within the IRS and Social Security Bureau.
“This is one of the biggest demonstrations we have seen since Trump began his second term, and it may be a sign of American frustration,” Hannah said.
“Protest organizers have been saying that this won’t lead to an immediate change, but it’s an important moment to show that many Americans are opposed to Donald Trump’s representative,” Hannah said.
International protests
Around the world, American expats and local supporters gather in cities including Berlin, Frankfurt, Paris and London.
In Paris, about 200 protesters, mainly Americans, gathered in the Republic of Delra, showing banners such as “resistance to tyrants,” “rule of law,” and “free feminists rather than fascism.”
Foreign Democratic Party spokesman Timothy Kautz emphasized the importance of global solidarity. “We must express solidarity with all the demonstrations in a thousand cities in the United States today,” he told Reuters.

Ezra Levin, co-founder of one of the indivisible groups, spoke with Reuters: “It’s a huge demonstration that sends a very clear message to Musk, Trump and Congressional Republicans and all Maga, and we don’t want our democratic community, our schools and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors and our neighbors.”
The White House defends the administration’s actions.
“President Trump’s position is clear: he will always protect the eligible beneficiaries of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Meanwhile, Democrats’ stance is providing social security, Medicaid and Medicaid benefits to illegal foreigners, which will bankrupt these programs and undermine these senior Americans.”
Pro-Palestinian groups also participated in demonstrations in Washington, protesting against U.S. government support for Israel’s new military operations in Gaza and its crackdown on campus protests.
