RedNote, Flip, Clapper and Likee claim the top of the App Store as TikTok returns online


TikTok may be making a comebackbut that hasn’t stopped other Chinese competitors from gaining users. In the lead-up to a ban on TikTok – which began on Sunday and lasted for a day – many other video apps rose in the ranks and now dominate the Top Charts in the App Store.

The Chinese app RedNote (listed in app stores as Xiaohongshu) became the No. 1 app in the US last week, followed by video apps like Clapper, Flip, and others. On Monday, following TikTok service restorationRedNote maintains its No. 1 place in the App Store, after the attracted about 700,000 new users in the US.

TikTok users’ move to RedNote intended to send a signal to US lawmakers and Meta that they want to join another Chinese app similar to TikTok rather than return to Instagram Reels.

Although TikTok is back online, the app stores has not yet hosted it for download; app marketplaces must still comply with US law, despite President-elect Trump’s assurances that he will extend the deadline to ban TikTok.

However, the top charts of both app stores continue to show a shift to other alternatives to TikTok.

In Apple’s US App Store, for example, video apps including RedNote, Likee, Clapper, and Flip hold the No. 1, 2, 4, and 10 spots on Monday morning’s Overall Top Charts. Preferred, an app dedicated to livestreams, is No. 15.

Social network Bluesky also just added an optional custom video feed, however, its app fell from the top 10 position it held last week in the US App Store. No. 13 on Monday morning in the App Store and No. 15 on Google Play.

However, Bluesky got a few more downloads thanks to TikTok’s ban and now has 28.29 million usersfrom 27.5 million last week.

According to estimates from app store intelligence provider AppfiguresRedNote, Flip, and Clapper, all saw a huge growth spurt last week from single-digit thousand downloads per day in early January to tens of thousands of downloads in the US last Friday.

RedNote, on the other hand, has received hundreds of thousands of downloads.

RedNote gets 818,000 new installs in the US across the App Store and Google Play during January 2025. Because the app is localized in Mandarin, the language learning app Duolingo also reported a 216% increase in US users trying to learn the language last week.

Currently, it is the No. 1 app in the US in the US App Store and Google Play, excluding games.

Clapper, a TikTok alternative aimed at teenagers and adults aged 17 and over, got 646,000 downloads on the App Store and Google Play in the US On Friday, it added 87,000 new downloads, or 1,030% more than the 7,000 new downloads it saw back. January 1, Appfigures reports. This is the No. 4 top app (excluding games) in the US App Store and No. 2 on Google Play.

Likee, a short video app, is the No. 2 in the US App Store and No. 3 on Google Play. It has seen a huge surge in growth, moving from No. 202 in the US App Store on Saturday to No. 2 at 3 a.m. on Sunday, Appfigures says. In total, it has seen 283,000 downloads in January so far. On Google Play, it jumped to No. 8 position in both apps and games, on Sunday night and has since fallen to No. 11. It is currently the No. 3 apps (excluding games).

For Android users, the short video app, Scoopz, made it to No. 4 position on Google Play while short drama app ReelShort is No. 7 on Google Play’s top apps list, excluding games.

Finally, Flip, which focuses on social commerce, grew to 580,000 downloads in January, the data showed. (However, Flip also ran more ads on TikTok last week, leading to gains.) It’s No. 10 in the US App Store and No. 9 in the top Google Play charts, excluding games.

Despite many TikTok users signaling that they will not use Instagram, Meta’s app continues to hold high rankings in both app stores, including No. 8 in the US Apple App Store Top Apps chart and No. 5 in Google Play’s Top Apps chart. on Monday morning.

VPN applications have also seen a brief surge

After TikTok was banned, US users immediately tried to install VPN applications to get around the restrictions to no avail. (TikTok’s mobile app remains blocked even when using VPNs).

Still, it is temporarily driving many new US users of VPN apps such as VPN – Super Unlimited Proxy, which grew from No. 91 app to No. 3 apps in 36 hours. Another app, VPN – Fast VPN Super, climbed 155 spots during the same period, and Nord VPN hit No. 9 after climbing to 160 spots in the top charts.

Other apps that rose hundreds of spots overnight after the ban include X-VPN, Proton VPN, Free VPN .org, and Express VPN.

The app store charts are likely to soon move again as US users realize they can return to TikTok and decide to switch from at least some of their recent backup options for one replacement
