Former top flight referee Dermot Gallagher has assessed the controversial moments in the midweek game, which included the first time in Premier League history that an official was denied a red card review on a pitchside monitor.
event: David Brooks clashed with Mark Cucurella off the ball and referee Robert Jones was sent to the pitchside monitor for a red card review. However, he decided not to take Brooks off – a first in the Premier League.
Dermot’s verdict: “VAR recommended a review because he believed there may have been violence.
“I wonder if VAR thought Brooks pulled Cucurella’s hair. It looked like his hair was pulled back.
“Brooks actually grabbed the front of Cucurella’s jersey. The referee watched it for a long time and discussed it.
“He came to the conclusion that Brooks pulled at the top of his shirt, which is why you see the clothesline effect. The referee thought it was recklessness rather than violence because it was a grabbing of the shirt.
“He believed it stopped a promising attack. It was not an act of violence – he did not grab him by the hair or throat.”
‘Jones studied the incident and was not subconscious’
Dermot Gallagher on Rob Jones’ decision not to send David Brooks off:
“I think Brooks grabbed the top of Cucurella’s jersey. Doing that would suggest the jersey was out. I wonder if that gave the VAR the impression that he grabbed his hair.
“The key is did he grab the top of his shirt or his throat? The referee looked and looked. Rob Jones didn’t subconsciously give him a red card. He had studied it.”
“Brooks might break Cucurella’s jaw”
Sky Sports’ Paul Merson on Brooks-Cucurella incident:
“He could easily break his jaw, which is dangerous. If a player is in danger, I think that’s red. I don’t see anything other than (red).”
“He went and watched the game in person and I don’t understand how he didn’t show the red card. I was surprised. For me, they dodged a bullet at Bournemouth.”
Did Cucurella piss off Brooks?
event: In the first half, Marc Cucurella had an off-the-ball collision with David Brooks, resulting in the Bournemouth forward being on the field.
Dermot said: “Cucurella was very cute because he did it behind Rob Jones. The assistant probably looked offside because the ball was already offside. Cucurella saw his chance and blocked Brooks. If the referee had seen that , he will get a yellow card.
“That was a long time later (the second incident). There was half-time. A lot happened between that incident and the 53rd minute.”
“It was a clumsy tackle – an easy decision”
event: Bournemouth were awarded a penalty when Moises Caicedo brought down Antoine Semenho.
Dermot said: It was a clumsy tackle, he didn’t get the ball and the referee (Robert Jones) was in perfect position – if you had the right vision when he removed his leg it would have been an easy call to give, the ball was the clue , indeed. Not moving.
“VAR cannot intervene in Arsenal’s corner kicks – it is not within its remit”
event: Arsenal were awarded a corner kick despite the ball appearing to come from winger Leandro Trossard. Gabriel then scored the winning goal from a set-piece against Tottenham Hotspur – but why didn’t VAR (Peter Banks) intervene?
Dermot said: “It’s a real shame because it’s all about the consequences. The referee (Simon Hooper) made the decision from where he was and he didn’t see the ball hit Trossard and it did and he got The last touch of the ball should have been a goal kick.
“When a corner kick comes, we wouldn’t talk about it if it was taken out of the game, but then it goes into the net and the consequences suddenly escalate.
“VAR can’t award anything other than red cards, penalties, goals, mistaken identity – they can’t start over, so it’s not within their remit at the moment. I don’t know if that will happen in the next few years. .”
“For Simon Hooper, he probably felt that he had actually left the pitch when the ball hit Trossard, but he did not. There is no doubt that this was a factual decision.”
‘Football’s most frustrating rule’
event: Wolves’ Santiago Bueno scored from a corner kick but it was ruled out by VAR due to handball.
Dermot said: “For neutral fans, this is the most frustrating rule in football. The law states that if the ball hits the scorer’s hand, the goal is disallowed. The referee did not see it.”
Did Everton deserve a penalty in their loss to Villa?
event: Everton were denied a penalty after Dominic Calvert-Lewin was tackled to the ground by Youri Tielemans.
Dermot said: This is very interesting. Is this a foul? Does he hold it? Did another player commit a foul? If the referee (Samuel Barrot) had awarded a penalty, I think the call for a foul on the goalkeeper would have been disallowed. When the ball came through, he was hampered and he (Abdoulaye Doucoure) ran right back into him.
“The referee was very calm”
event: Trent Alexander-Arnold throws a punch and appears to catch Elliott Anderson. The incident was dismissed.
Dermot says: He didn’t catch him much and the referee handled it well. The Forest players did not dispute this, which helped the referee. The referee was very calm.
